Somerset just did not have the defense to keep up with the powerful offense of of Belfry. As always I loved watching John go out and play, he has been an amazing high school player and I hope to see him and some of the other seniors to do well on Saturdays.

 

I do have a question.. Did anyone hear the radio show after the game? They had a special where Coach Cobb went through and had a run down of each player that was graduating. On one of the particular players he said that one young man had the potential to become a great D-1 player, but just did not have the grades. Does anyone else believe that something like that should not be said on the radio?? Regardless if it is true or not.

 

You've got a selective memory. He never said that. He said that the kid hadn't played since his freshman season because he had to get his grades in order. He said that if he had been able to play all 4 years that he would be a D-1 recruit and that he hoped that someone would take a chance on him. He said that the kid had gotten his grades in order and had been a big asset to the team. I didn't think that it was inappropriate since he pointed out that the player in question had gotten his grades in order and was a big part of the team his senior year.

Whatever, neither I nor any of the parents that I've talked to had any objection to what he said about any of the kids on the radio. He found something nice to say about each and every senior whether they had been with the team for four years or if they had just come out this year. He mentioned that as a group they had won 2 Regional Titles and 3 District Titles and had the highest grade point average of any senior group that he had ever had. As for Chase Hall what was he supposed to do berate him? There was nothing wrong with allowing Hall to come back out for his senior year. It wasn't like he had done something to get kicked off last season. As long as everything was worked out between Hall, the Coaching Staff and the rest of the team I don't know what the big deal was. You're trying to stir up something out of nothing, you seem to be the only one upset about it. The actual kids and parents are fine with it. Thanks for your concern though.

As did I congratulate all the seniors and wished them the best, and the issue was not that he let Chase back on the team cause Chase was a very good quarterback and needed to play, the problem was on the pre-season radio show a year ago he said that Chase would never play for him. I am glad he "let" Chase come back. Just another thing Coach Cobb has had to come back on his own word. But I don't want to get all the jumper fans all stirred up by making a good point.

Funny how when a team is out of the playoffs, then you see someone trying to tear them down.

 

Focus on the Positives and not the negatives... nothing good ever comes from it!

Let's see...Somerset played Pulaski (9-1), only loss was to Lincoln who is still in it at 5A, Metcalfe another one still in it in 2-A, and Corbin who lost to future champion Newport Cath. Other than that it was all district play and they ran the table. They prepared fine for Belfry and would have done better with some better execution as they did later in the game against the Belfry STARTERS. Somerset has never backed down and does what it can to get there. Bottom line Belfry is one of the best teams in the state any class and they held their own against them. Good season Jumpers!

maroonmadness, I hesitate to say this because it may not be important given the circumstances, and I stress that this is not meant to take anything away from the Jumpers or diminish in any way their fine season. But Belfry built a 38-7 lead against them and then pulled several of their impact players. The bulk of the last quarter was played by a mix of starters and 2nd stringers and they ran a very vanilla offense, just trying to use up some clock and preserve the win. Somersets last two scores came with about 7 minutes and 3 minutes left respectively against this group.

 

And to be fair, Somerset was hurt some by injuries and weren't at full strenght either.

 

I was very impressed with the Briar Jumpers and the way they played with a never say die attitude, and again, I'm not knocking them at all. But the game was not close and I don't think it's accurate to suggest it was.

 

Had Coach Haywood wanted to he could have left all the starters in and made a statement. That wasn't his focus as he had to consider the upcoming week(s) and when the game was comfortably put away, he took the opportunity to rest some guys.

 

After the 2nd score, with 3 minutes to go and with the margin only 17 points, he reinserted those guys for a series. We needed to make sure we got a couple of 1st downs and I'm sure he didn't want to see some miracle finish. It was the right move, IMO.

Congrats Belfry. Reading the nice recaps posted by Toots and others, Belfry must have looked very good last Friday. Good luck the rest of the way. If you end up playing Louisville Central, I think you'll take them.
