Perhaps I am naive but I don't believe that 99% of the adult population has tried cocaine. Taken a drink or smoked pot maybe, but not cocaine.

While I'm in the 1%, I would never hold one's high school/college days against them. This is nothing more than an interesting footnote and hopefully the students took the true message as it was intended.

"Youth" is a varying term for some, including W.

Then you better hope that Jesus Christ runs for president, otherwise everyone one of us has a past, and hopefully we all have the message that we can overcome the mistakes we have made.

 

Obama is just verbalizing the mistakes that he made. GW had a problem with alcohol - that he overcame and was stronger for it.

 

"I experimented, it was not my thing, or I realized how stupid that was . . ." is not a bad message. That is a pretty strong message.

So you can forgive George W's past but not Obama's confessions? I'm sure the same young people said the same thing about his for two terms.

While most will say politicians will talk out of both sides of their mouth. Those same people will want those same politicians to lie or withhold the truth. I like Obama's message & discussion about it. I would rather him say, yes I tried it and it was a waste instead of not talking about it. Ignoring a problem or situation will not make it go away.

I didn't vote for George even though my Christians friends bashed me, his past didn't even enter my mind. I just don't think it was a good idea to tell the kids of your past at this time, I've never smoked anything or taken any drugs, and I wouldn't hold that against someone because it was in their past thats why its called the "past".

I think Franklin Graham is a great man with a wonderful message. He is a great example of how the Lord can change you. But he is not running for president.

What is the difference? AL was inferring that telling the failures of our past enable young people to want to indulge in them as well. I am simply disagreeing. In fact the way most young people look at politicians today they are probably more respectful of the message of one who tells you where he/she failed than put on a face of family values and yet their record shows otherwise on a personal note. (i.e. Newt Gingrich and others)

 

Why would we not want such honesty from our presidential candidates? Wouldn't it be better to give your message and admit your sins/mistakes then let a reporter find it out and blow up the story and any comment you make is reactive rather than proactive?
