It'll do like it's done in the past when I get hit hard: I'll be down and feel like hell for a few days, drop 15-20 pounds, then come back stronger for it.

 

Well you are mentally tough I will give you that... thats a good thing

I got a flu shot years ago and was never so sick with the flu that winter in my life. Was talked into again the next year by listening to "oh, that may happen one time but would never happen again"....O.K., I got the shot and was sick all winter again (2nd year in a row). That was it for me and flu shots and was a very long time ago. I have heard and understand that it is nothing like it used to be but I don't know if I will be convinced.

I'll stick with NyQuill by night, Day Care and tylenol day ad night and go through it. (with an occaisional shot of "thera flu" and another famous Ky. Beverage (for medicinal purposes only....)

 

I feel it likely that if I take the flu shot I will actually get the flu. They are injecting you with a live, albeit weakened, version of the virus. People do actually get sick every year from taking the shot.

Now remember they can only "predict" which strain will be here... you my friend have bad luck lol and must have gotten the other strain :irked:

It has nothing to do with luck. It has to do with the fact that by not subjecting myself to all these little remedies, I have been able to build up and maintain immunity to the illnesses.

 

Instead of going nuts and going to the doctor, I tough it out, and as a result, it just doesn't hit me that hard. And when I was a kid, my parents didn't panic every time I got a touch of the sniffles, and I am tougher -- from an immunological standpoint -- for it.

 

It also helps that I know my body very well and how it reacts to outside stimuli, and if something's wrong, I can use natural remedies -- like fruit juices -- to knock it out. Life's too precious to go running around hiding in fear of the next big "superbug" that comes down the pipe.

The last time I went to the doctor for an illness I was in elementary school. I was hit with something this summer (the first time I can remember being sick since I was young) along with the rest of my family and I was the last one to get it, the first to be rid of it, and the only one not to go to the doctor. Just sat on the couch and gritted it out. I'd say the odds are in my favor for not catching a cold this winter.

PH and I always get one...Because he is a cancer survivor, his doctor told us that we both need one....now with other factors with him, we are told by all of his doctors that we both need one.

My job offers them for free. Last year was the first time I got one, and the first time I had the flu. I decided against it this year. I have heard people say that you can't get the flu from a flu shot. It's a dead virus. Blah, blah, blah. It sure does seem to happen to people a lot though. Maybe it was just my imagination.

 

In response to Sportz Addict....perhaps the nurse that gave my shot wasn't very good at it. I sure felt it and my arm was sore for a couple of days.

I understand your theory about building up your ability to fight infection, and there is some validity to it. However, you can't build immunity to the annual flu bug because it is different each year.

 

It's not about panicking, running around in fear, or about being tough. It's about staying healthy, and taking sensible precautions. Now, if you are young, strong, healthy, and eat a proper diet you should be okay. The flu (and I mean the REAL flu) will still knock you for a loop; but you'll likely survive.

 

Your best defense has nothing to do with what you've done in the past, or how tough you've been. In fact, I was once told by a immunological specialist that your body has a set amount of damage that it can sustain in a lifetime. Each time you become ill, it adds a little to that amount. Your best defense is to be as strong and healthy as you can be now, and to take the proper precautions to avoid catching anything in the first place.

I get one every year.

I'm not sure if i ever have or not. Don't really see a point to either, I never really get very sick. Just a cold once or twice a year but they're never bad enough to affect my everyday functioning.

I always get mine. It doesn't hurt and I've never gotten sick from it. Sure beats being deathly sick for two weeks.

I have asthma and several years ago on the advice of my doctor I got a flu shot. It made me so sick, I landed in the hospital for 4 days, so my vote was...
