How many crappy basketball teams qualify for the playoffs in KY or OH?

 

Every crappy team qualifies!!!

It is what it is unless you just take the top 2 teams because of the number of schools. Shorten the season by a week and let the top two play. That makes it a district championship game, then a regional championship, sectional champion, then state championship! Every game is good. It doesn't help a 10-0 team to match up on a 0-10. The outcome will be what it is and the potential for someone being injured after playing in frustration increases.

 

Remember it's all about the BUCKS for KHSAA and the schools with all of these games.:irked:

 

Actually the KHSAA doesn't get any money from the playoffs, only the championship games. Gates are split 50/50 between the participating tams after expenses.

This is disgusting. It puts such a damper on what past teams did by qualifying for the playoffs. It means so much less now.

In the old 4-class system HHS played a LOT of 1-9 and 0-10 teams in the first round of the playoffs. So, how far back are these 'past' teams? Also, is the basketball and baseball state tournament 'disgusting' because they let everyone in?

As a fan I think it is horrible to see so many teams with records like that make the playoffs.

They failed to make the playoffs because they did not receive enough secondary points meaning the schedule they played was horrible. You play yourself in the playoffs for the most part but these guys played themself out.If that makes sense.

I’m originally from Marietta, Ohio which is right up the road from Waterford and you are right that their strength of schedule had everything to do with them not making the playoffs, but they can only play the teams on their schedule. Since they are in the smallest division they can’t play any teams in lower divisions and several of the teams that they played were winning teams when they were placed on the schedule. Maybe saying the Ohio playoff system is broke is a bit too extreme, but I certainly believe that it is worse then Kentucky’s system. At least in Kentucky a 9-1 team will always make the post season. Another positive aspect of Kentucky’s system is that teams are in districts with other teams of equal size, where in Ohio, league (district) play is far less meaningful since teams in the same league might be in different regions and/or divisions. Don’t get me wrong though, I do not like the first two rounds of Kentucky’s new playoff system, but I do feel it is better then Ohio’s in many respects.

I think in studing the teams in Ohio as much as I can and in talking to a lot of people in the game and those who follow the game more times than not you have a good feel if a team is going to be good from year to year. I heard all during the off season that Waterford would have to go 10-0 with the schedule they had to make the playoffs and this turned out to be true.

I'd much rather complain about teams that made it and maybe shouldn't than to take away the opportunity for a high school kid to play in a playoff game because it 'diminishes the feat of making the playoffs'...

 

Honestly, any coach that makes just making the playoffs their final goal should be fired on the spot anyway...

Why couldn't they reduce the number of teams in the playoffs to the top three teams in each district? The #1 seed could get a bye in the first round and play the winner of the #2 vs. #3 matchup. This would make the regular season games much more meaningful as a bye week would be huge allowing the #1 seed a week to rest and get healthy. Is there a reason I'm overlooking why this wouldn't work? I haven't heard anyone sugguest such a plan.

I think that would vary from team to team. The coach of a team on a roll and playing well (as most #1 seeds probably would be) would want to continue to play. However, the coach of a team that may have some injuries (as all teams do at this time of year) might welcome a bye week.

.....regardless, by eliminating the #1 vs. #4 games, the playoffs would be much more competitve and entertaining.

None in Ohio, but an entire district tournament can be played in a few days in basketball.

I'm just not a fan of robbing a kid the opportunity for one more football game. Over a high school career that could be almost like another full season of football, at no point can that be a bad thing.

Do you really think a 0-10 team wants to get their brains beat in by a 10-0 team. I can't think of one positive from this matchup.
