^It rained A LOT this past week, but the field needed the rain and has held up nicely this year. MC's field is not named....an upgrade to the facilities is in the near future as well.

 

As for Highlands not passing much, they didn't really need to...Conner, Hurt, and Cecil between the hashes was dominant.....MC is also MUCH better against the pass than the run....the Indians put decent pressure on Cecil but he is such an athlete that he could escape (aka the TD pass in the 1st half).

 

The only type of team that I think could give the Birds problems is a big, physical team that could pound the ball and stuff the run....the Birds are quick but small IMO.....however, there is no St. X type team in 5A so the Birds should be in Louisville in December....

The playing surface was in great shape, but it was obvious the Birds are used to turf....there was a lot of slipping by ball carriers.

Nice hi-lite on the WKYT 27 web site...shows the Cecil scramble-pass to Connor for TD (at about the 3:00 minute mark)...also a VERY astute comment fron the announcer: "This just in....Highlands is good!" (LOL)

LN's opinion is that our passing game is in great shape and there's no need to work on something that is in great shape. Then again, he was an offensive linemen so I don't think he was ever really fond of the pass. He said he developed that philosophy from George Simons, who coached him in youth football. Seems that George's son, Dave, also hates the pass and loves it when Highlands runs every play.

 

I heard LN once say that his opinion of mixing up the offense was adding in an occasional sweep to a steady stream of isolations up the middle and off tackle. Seems about right.

 

Back to the game: again, the MC folks were great. Gary Fritz, the AD, was extremely nice and helpful. The MC players played very hard. They were quick and played hard. I don't know if we wore them down or what happened, but in the third quarter Highlands just asserted themselves.

 

Good luck to the Indians the rest of the season. It really is fun getting out of N. Ky and getting to see other programs and meet their fans. Hope we keep the series going with MC for many years.

No, back then there were two school systems in Richmond. The city school was Madison High. The county school was Madison Central. They consolidated in the early 90's.

 

Madison High is now Madison Middle School.
