You're good. Otis was LN's hero growing up (well, at least until his hopes of being running back dwindled...then his hero became Jerry Kremer).

I've just never bought into the concept that you can't run the ball even if the other team puts 11 in the box. You have 10 guys blocking. If all 10 do their job and the guy running the ball can make their 11th guy miss or their 11th guys gets hung up in the mess, its should be a td every time, as there is no one back there to stop the td. You have to have a very good blocking line and the running backs have to be able to block, I'll admit. Highlands has those things this year.

 

I know the Alexander story. But I believe that Highlands O line is better than Boone's was that year (no disrespect intended towards them). Plus, Owen's offense was straight ahead football (I played under his system at Highlands) and there was little deception in that offense. Highlands O has a lot of deception and misdirection in its offense, which makes a big difference.

 

We can pass the ball just fine. I really don't understand why people think we can't.

 

Give me my choice between a running team that occasionally passes vs a passing team that occasionally runs, and I'll take the former every time, particularly in light of the playoffs in November and early December means at least one game, in most years, played in inclement weather (which can cause havoc to a passing game).

I'm not saying pass for pass sake. I'm just saying that in the games I've watched (not nearly as many as you guys) I have not seen the "we pass the ball just fine" unless you're talking about Tony G coming off the bench against Trotwood. My question dealt with preparing for the "what if we HAVE to pass because our run game isn't working as well as we'd like."

I understand your point. I think its just a matter of offensive philosophy. We passed the ball very well against LexCath. Wasn't it Trotwood where Cecil came in the game at the end of the first half and threw a great long pass to set up a last second field goal, which in my opinion was the series that broke Dixie's back? I don't think that was TG, as he started the game and did not come off the bench. Bottom line: because we run the ball so well, it makes it much easier to pass when you want to. Are we a great passing team like Dixie? No we are not. But we pass well enough to keep teams somewhat honest and when they don't stay honest, we will pass the ball successfully. I tried to find our passing stats on line but couldn't, but I think Cecil has completed a pretty decent percentage of his passes which would indicate to me that when we do pass, we pass just fine.

 

Plus, an added advantage of pounding the ball over and over is that it really wears out the other teams' defensive linemen and linebackers. With the Highlands linemen being in such great shape physically, come the second half the other team generally gets worn down, which makes running and passing the ball easier. I think that explains why Highlands has pretty much dominated the second half of games that were close in the first half (Dixie, LexCath and Madison Central come to mind quickly).

I found the stats in today's Post. Cecil is 42 of 73 for 500 some odd yards. Which means he's completing over 50 % of his passes and the catches are netting over 10 yards a completion. That compares very favorably with those teams that are "passing teams". Heck, Dixie, which has one of the better passing teams that I've seen is completing less than 50%. If you were a defensive coordinator, would you discount a team's ability to pass that is completing over 50% and 10 yards a catch? I sure wouldn't. Bottom line: we pass well enough to keep teams honest and well enough to beat teams with the pass than don't stay honest.
