With South Laurels upset over Mercer there is now a 3 way tie in the district for the Final 2 playoff spots.

 

Since SW beat SL, SL beat Mercer, and Mercer beat SW you can not use head to head matchups to break the tie.

 

I think the tie breaker is by the number of wins that the teams you beat have.

 

If that is the case here is how it stands at this point in time:

 

Southwesten has beaten South Laurel who has 4 wins, Dunbar who has 3 wins. They still have to play Boyle co. who has 2 wins and GRC who has 1 win.

 

 

South Laurel has wins over Valley who has 6 wins, North Laurel with 0 wins, Knox Central with 5 wins and Mercer who has 4 wins.

 

 

Mercer County has won over Rusell Co. who has 1 win, Greenville TN. who has ???? wins, Southwestern who has 2 wins, and Boyle Co. with 2 wins. Mercer still has to play Rockcastle who has 4 wins.

 

So as of right now South Laurel has 15 points, SW has 7 points, Mercer has 5 points + the number of wins Greenville TN. has.

Greeneville is 5-2 entering tonight's game, so make it 10 for Mercer.

Thanks for that info. I have a feeling the next two weeks is going to be real interesting.

W/ SL's win, they are in, no matter what happens the rest of the season. I don't think the other teams can make up the amount of points needed to catch up.That's what was talked about on the radio tonight. Now it comes down to the final games for SW & Mercer, & their opponents. Do out of state wins or losses count in the scoring system? What a whacky year for football.

I dont think you can use OUT of STATE win towards a tie Breaker.

b) TIE-BREAKER (more than two teams). Should three or more

teams tie for the a district position based upon the win-loss

record, the position shall be determined by the following:

i) If one of the teams has defeated each of the other teams

tied in games contested between them, that team shall be

declared to hold the highest position, and the winner of the

game between the remaining teams (if less than four) shall

be declared the second highest position. In the event of

more than three teams being tied, where one has defeated

each of the tied teams, that team shall be declared the

highest position, and the tie-breaking procedure shall be

re-applied for the remaining tied teams.

ii) If the tie remains, each team tied for the position shall

receive one point for each game won by any four of their

defeated opponents in all games, except for the games

played between any two of the tied teams. All games played

shall be counted in applying the tie-breaking procedure,

including out of state games, with the exception that a

defeated school may be counted only once in the procedure

regardless of the number of games played against that

particular school. Teams awarded forfeit victories (whether

or not a forfeit fee is paid) may count the defeated opponents

of the forfeiting team, provided the game was not replaced

on the schedule.

You cant use wins over a district opponent in the Tiebreaker. Only non-district games go towards the total.

South Laurel has 11 points (possibility of reaching 27 points)

Mercer Co. has 8 points ( possibilitly of reaching 19 points)

Southwestern has 3 points. ( 9 is the highest possible total they can get and that would require Dunbar beating Trinity)

It's funny how things work out, so it seems, for Mercer this year. Mercer has had 6 of their games this year (Greeneville, TN.., Lincoln County, Pulaski County, Watertown, TN.., Hopkinsville and South Laurel) all come down to the final minute/ seconds before either game was decided...all, but one of them ended in a loss, except for the win over 4A Greeneville, TN, who is now 6-2.....and, that BIG win over them, might just be what is needed for Mercer to be assured a playoff spot.

 

Regardless, Mercer has another shot to take their fate into their own hands by comming out next week, starting MONDAY, and beating Rockcastle County....which would all, but etch in stone, for sure, that Mercer makes it into what seems to be an absolutely wide open Class 5A playoffs, especially within their own district playoffs. (IMO opinion, it seems, HIGHLANDS and BG are the clear-cut favorites...then, everybody else).

 

On a side note, and not trying to look in the past, but Mercer having beat Greeneville, TN...who is in the same district as PERINNEAL Tennesse powers, Morristown East and Morristown West, winning and end the thick of things down there,shows what kind of team, despite a current 4-5 record, that Mercer has.

 

Go out this week, practice and work your tails off for Rockcastle County, beat them, get in the "big dance" and GO GET IT!!:thumb:

Lincoln went through this last year in the 4A district trying to figure out who they would play the following week. You can count wins for district opponents as long as the district opponents are not involved in the 3 way tie. However, in this case the only district wins these three teams have are all against each other so in this case district wins do not count. You can use the wins against any 4 defeated opponents.

I lived in Knoxville for 4 1/2 years and none of those three teams were ever considered "powers" in that area. Maryville was always the team to beat each year in 4A in the Knoxville area.
