Mason County would not knock Russell out of the playoffs if they won. Russell would just be 3-1 in districts and still be a playoff contender.

 

Unfortunately vertually everyone makes the playoffs. I have to wonder how many 0-10 teams will be in the playoffs?

Belfry nor Mason will have enough... Grutza was a star along with Lofton but even they weren't consistent enough at the high school level .. Belfry will be one dimensional , best man standing in a toe to toe slugfeast will win. We have just as good a chance as they do , with exception , our secondary doesn't run support very well either , but front seven are very good/fast.

rfcinky, I meant the game that will be played in the playoffs. Against Mason. Everybody from Russell keeps looking past Mason in the playoffs and they can easily get beaten by Mason in the second week of the playoffs.

Championships are won with good defense. Right now, half of our defense is thin as paper. Anyone that sees this film will figure that out in the first quarter. Something has to be done to get it fixed before we make any kind of a deep run in the playoffs.

Amazing? I did not think so. It was a good catch over the middle that Russell ran him to the sidelines and commited some kind of penalty. Facemask I think. He is a very good receiver.

RedDevilMVP, I will take my chances on Mason Roughing up the Devils in the second round of the playoffs and Belfry ripping apart an overrated Russell team. They are a good team but not on the same level as Belfry IMO.

This loss should hurt and hurt badly. I hope the players remember that feeling and build from it.

 

The positives:

 

Both teams played with alot of heart and intensity. It was obvious from the start.

 

Both offenses moved the ball well. Russell ran the ball well though Jones still looked a little gimpy on the ankle.

 

Both teams played well enough to win and made big plays. It was very entertaining to watch

 

The negatives:

 

Russells pass defense. IMO cover two with man underneath would have been better. Too many times the cornors and safety were isolated with no deep help. The young secondary really should have learned a lesson tonight.

 

Turnovers and silly penalties. Both teams had some turnovers but they were pretty even. The facemask penalty on the final play is something you cannot do. Russell had players in position and Ponzer was not going to score on the final play. He really did make a fabulous catch on that play though and this is just an example of never knowing what is going to happen and playing hard until the final horn.

 

 

Coaching:

 

I hate to say it but I really think Russell got out coached tonight. The onside kick with 11 seconds being the prime example. SK had one long kick return but Dolly has plenty of leg to kick it deep and should have done so. Why give SK the short field with so little time left.

 

 

In the end both teams should hold there heads up. They both made plays to win the game and played hard until the end. Simon Kenton gets a BIG win that should only boost their confidence. Russell played a team that could match up better physically with them and also played well enough to win.

 

Russell will be a factor in 3A. They need to get ready for a very good Mason County team and reamain positive.

He had just over 200 yards and 3 TDs I believe. He does not have great size but has very good hands and is a tough kid.

FBALL, I will take your statements for what it is worth, "Well minded great information on the Russell team". You speak with many, many facts instead of from the heart like many others. I hope that you would agree with me that it is too dangerous to overlook Mason County in the second round of the playoffs!

Agree with FB ... this team is on track ... Defense has lot's of positives .... not far as many think away - experience ...

I would take my chances with Mason or Belfry as well. But I would not count Russell out. They do have some things that need to be fixed but they are also capable of beating either IMO. The front seven for Russell play well again on both sides of the ball. If that young secondary can settle down a bit they will be just fine.

personally, I see it being Belfry vs. Russell with Belfry sending a message (large victory) about last seasons post-season defeat. I "truly" hope Russell wins and plays in Louisville, but I see too many people overlooking too many teams before Belfry and their appearance in the finals.
