I look at Greenup the same way I have looked at Johnson Central for years I have all ways thought that JC was a sleeping giant and when the right personal comes along and wakes it up then look out . I think JC has the people in place and it started at the AD position then he brings in a pretty good coach in Matney . JC is a very large school just like GC with alot of kids to pick from . Like I said GC is a sleeping giant and they will be a day when they get woke up and I just hope we are up to par for the battle .

To start with, other then Raceland, I am, more then likely, closer to Greenup Co. then any other program in the area. I went to Argillite elemetary K-6, then moved and transferred to Raceland. I have many friends with students at Greenup Co and I know several faculty members at Greenup Co. With that being said, I am not bashing Greenup Co, I just wish they could right the ship.

 

Greenup needs to start over. Whether it is real or perceived, there is a big split in the Greenup Co district. You have South Shore and the rest of the district. In the past and present all the administration is from South Shore: High School Principle, AD, Head Football Coach, Superintendent. For the most part this is the way it has been for years and the rest of the district resents the district because of that. Raceland and Russell receive a lot of transfers because of this split. This is one of the reasons my family moved and I transferred to Raceland as a 7th grader. My parents knew, as well as I as a 7th grader, that I would not get to play any sport at Greenup Co. Some people will argue that these players are not good enough to start at Greenup Co and they are replaced by better players. This argument is not valid, because Raceland and Russell beat Greenup Co with those players.

 

I am not talking about recruiting, and I hope no one else uses that as an excuse. These players are not recruited, they leave on their own and are welcomed with open arms at Raceland and Russell.

 

I think Sammons is done after this season. I think Greenup Co. should hire a Head Coach from outside South Shore, weather it is someone from the other end of the district or someone from outside the county. This, by itself, will not fix the problem. Greenup Co also has to hire an AD from outside South Shore. And possibly some Assistant Coaches from outside South Shore. Doing this will open up the program. You will see more players from outside South Shore, you will see more players form Wurtland, Argillite, Oldtown, and other areas, you will also see players staying and not moving.

 

You may say this is discriminating against South Shore. Maybe. But, like I said, real or perceived, their is a split in the district. The above is what I hear from almost every person that has students at Greenup Co. They all say, not some, but all say that if you do not live in South Shore you will not get to play at Greenup, most of them are from outside Shouth Shore, but some are from South Shore. There are many student athletes at Raceland, who's parents went to and played sports at Greenup Co and this is the reason they give for their kids going to Raceland.

 

Again, I am not bashing Greenup Co, in fact if the above happens then it will help Greenup Co and hurt my Raceland School District. But, this is just my opinion on what would solve a lot of the drama at Greenup. Because, as long as people think they are being treated differently because of where they live, they are going to fight with people from the the chosen area. With that split, Greenup will never be united, and will not be able to compete as they should.

Uh-oh. The dirty little secret is out. :eek: Someone made the JC (Johnson Central) comparison, and I think that's a good one. I really thought when Bill Tom Ross went there things would turn around, but he just wasn't healthy enough to get the program turned around. Now I was not close to that situation by any stretch but I perceive that he- as an outsider- filled the pot up with water, put it on the stove, and turned on the burner. The newer administration at JC brought the water to a boil and Matney put int he ingredients for a delicious dinner. Best of all the fine folks at JC finally stood back and LET them do the work.

 

At Greenup you have to think at some point these people will realize they are harming their school's reputation and most of they are doing a complete discredit to their kids. From the outside looking in I can't figure out why anyone would want to coach any sport in Greenup in that environment. I know may Greenup alums and I now a couple fo people very well who work at Greenup schools now and the problem is showing no signs of going away. At some point GC parents and powers-that-be have to stop acting like Junior High kids or Greenup is simply doomed to mediocrity. Simple as that.

 

I hope for their sake they right the ship. As a Raceland alum and a guy who went to Russell for a number of years as well, I want Greenup County schools to excel in all sports. I wish Greenup nothing but the best, but if the culture does not change there is not much hope. It's time for some people involved at GCHS to grow up and let the Coaches do their jobs, to hold their staff accountable, and to cultivate a healthy environment for their kids to play sports in. They owe the kids that.

You're right someone does need to take control and stand up for the boys. If the coaches were doing their jobs we wouldn't be having this problem. A real coach who cares anything about his players would take a stand for what's right, no matter the consequences!! GC has quite a few seniors on the team and what college would want to scout for players from a losing team. There is so much more potential on that team, more than any of us are seeing utilized. You're right someone does need to take control and stand up for the boys. If the coaches were doing their jobs we wouldn't be having this problem. A real coach who cares anything about his players would take a stand for what's right, no matter the consequences!! GC has quite a few seniors on the team and what college would want to scout for players from a losing team. There is so much more potential on that team, more than any of us are seeing utilized. That's a shame for those boys. They deserve better!!

I love to see student athletes from this area get the opportunity to pay for some or all of their college education by playing football. And, there are a lot of players from this area who are doing just that right now. If you have a player on the Greenup Co football team. You can help this to happen for them. Many coaches do not work as hard as they should to get scholarships for them. You can do this. Get a game film of the best game your player has had, if they will not give it to you, then film it yourself, sometimes this is better anyway, you can focus on that player (particularly if he is a lineman). And write on the film the color jersey he is wearing and the number he is wearing. Then type a resume of his scholastic and athletic accomplishments, including his 40 time, bench max, squat max, deadlift max, clean max, and GPA. Then send it to the colleges of his choose, really hit the D2, D3, and NAIA schools. If he is decent he can get a scholarship, even if he is on a loosing team. After you send the tapes, wait a week and call the Head Coach at the colleges, ask what else he wants/needs and send that to him as well. Please, take this on yourself.

:thumb::thumb:Ram it is sad to say but you have just NAILED the problems wit GHHS athletics dead to rights. Since the conception od GCHS (72" I belive) it had ben McKell - South Shore / the rest of the conty/district. This is always how it has worked down there and is common knowledge.

 

You also made a good point about the GCHS kids/athletes that through the year save went to other schools. No recruiting was going on at all. GCHS admin and coaches themselves ran kids off and deep down they know this.

 

I really hope that GCHS gets their programs woked out. that is a fine school system and coul be so much better. Only the kids are being hurt by all of the "power stuggle" and "bickering".

I also agree with the idea that you stated about GCHS needing to go outside (I mean way outside - not from this area) for head coaches and get away from the "good ol' boy" system that has been in place for way to long there.

Where is GCHS AD Chris Alister from? I thought he grew up in Greenup. I think he may live in South Shore, now due to his wife. Greg Loagan GCHS Baseball from Lloyd. Varisty BB coach Leach, not from GC at all. Was former coach TJ fromSouth Shore?
