September 29, 200718 yr Author ^ yes...but in reality they are simply being exposed for what they really are....a great offensive team, a solid defensive team, with an average starting staff...and a horrible, HORRIBLE bullpen...what does that equal? a second place finish.
September 29, 200718 yr No major league team has failed to finish first after having at least a seven-game lead with 17 to play. The home losing streak is the Mets’ longest since dropping nine in a row from Aug. 28-Sept. 12, 2004. Will Randolph be fired if the Mets don't make the playoffs?
September 30, 200718 yr Author The Mets are out.....I don't think Willie should be fired....I think Minaya nees to take it upon himself to secure a bullpen for them...and they should be just fine.
September 30, 200718 yr Still a little numb....after 6 months you would have thought the relief would have been there by now. All the offense in the world gets you nothing without some decent pitching (which BTW means more than 4 innings from your starters as well). Wagner was a bust down, IMO, down the stretch. It was not the fault of Willie. The players (all of them) did not get it done plain and simple. It is going to be a long winter. Kudos to the Phils, they hung around late and made a great run to close it out.

Easier said than done my friend, as the Reds and just about every other team will be seeking to do the same thing.
September 30, 200718 yr ^ Not really....they were exposed...they had no relief.... One of the biggest chokes ever I don't know how can say not really.
October 1, 200718 yr Author Easier said than done my friend, as the Reds and just about every other team will be seeking to do the same thing. The thing is...the Mets have as deep of pockets you could have...they will overpay for pitching this offseason, hopefully the moves will pay off.
October 1, 200718 yr The thing is...the Mets have as deep of pockets you could have...they will overpay for pitching this offseason, hopefully the moves will pay off. But wonder why they made no moves these last 2 months to secure a better bullpen????
October 1, 200718 yr ^ Not really....they were exposed...they had no relief.... It was the biggest collapse in that amount of games in history. I'd have to call that a pretty big choke.
October 1, 200718 yr ^ Not really....they were exposed...they had no relief.... No actually, it WAS the biggest choke job given the amount of games remaining in Major League history. It was a total team effort. Exposed? Don't give me that. They had played 145 games before this stretch--their flaws were already well known. It isn't as though teams suddenly said, "Hey, this is how you beat these guys." 5-12 down the stretch including 8 losses to the Nationals and Marlins is an EPIC choke job. Before you try to blame this on your bullpen lets take a closer look at their 12 losses: 3-2 vs. Phillies--Winning run scores on an unearned run 5-3 vs. Phillies--Carlos Beltran misplays ball into 2 run triple. 10-6 vs. Phillies--Mets make 6 errors 12-4 vs. Nats--Lawrence lasts only 3.1 innings, defense makes 4 more errors 9-8 vs. Nats--Maine allows 8 runs in 4.1 innings 8-7 vs. Marlins--Bullpen cost them this one giving up 4 runs in 9th and 10th 13-4 vs. Nats--Pelfrey 6 runs in 5.2 innings 10-9 vs. Nats--Glavine 6 runs in 5 innings 9-6 vs. Nats--Humber 5 runs in 4 innings 3-0 vs Cards--Shut out by JOEL PINIERO 7-4 vs. Marlins--Perez 6 runs in 3.2 innings 8-1 vs Marlins--Offense 1 run in deciding game, Glavine 7 runs in 0.1 innings. So you have losses that should be blamed on: the offense, the defense, the starters and the bullpen. That is a total team effort and the definition of a CHOKE. Especially considering the teams that beat them. Someone is responsible for this, it may not be Willie but someone's head will roll.
October 1, 200718 yr choke job, I don't care if the pen was exposed. When a team blows a 7 game lead with 17 to go it is a choke. If the pen was that bad how did they have the 7 game lead?
