If you were a high school football coach, would you rather your team be consisted of size, or speed? Please explain why.

Speed, it's one thing you can't teach. Anyone can get fat, it's alot harder to get fast. Speed kills, it opens up alot more things for both the O and D.

I completely agree. Speed opens everything up on a football field.

On offense you can get around size by picking on the ends. On defense you can beat size by shooting the gaps and it doesn't matter how big a ball carrier is he can be tackled if you stay low and use proper form. Speed is much more important--although I do have to say big fast kids beat little fast kids if the technique is equal.

Speed baby speed. Danville coach Sam Harp would probably agree with me on this one.

I think any coach would want speed, as well as I would. Of course, in the grander scheme of things, if you could make up you perfect football team you would want both. And speed is a relative term. In a perfect world, I would want 6'5" 280lb linemen - who were faster then any of my opponent's linemen. RB's with good size and good speed. Tall Receivers with lightning speed. And a Defense with good team speed, not necessarily individual speed, but good team speed.

Speed and size are two things that can not be coached. Either you have them or you don't.

That is one of the things that is great about football. One body type will not win you many games. You need many different types of athletes. You need tall fast receivers, big strong fast backs, and big strong linemen with good foot quickness. There is a place for everyone.

I don't know...Pennix (sp?) from a few years back was big AND fast.

You can't tackle what you can't catch.

True. And a VERY nice combination to have in a high school back.

Of course the double edged sword is the combo of speed and size, but all anyone needs to point at is the success of Boyle County a few years back and see those 6'0" 180-200 lb kids swarming and devouring other teams.

Point speed does KILL....

Of course the double edged sword is the combo of speed and size,

I remember watching a team that had just that back in 1990. That was a fun team to watch.

I was wondering if that would come up;) The slowest starter on the O-Line wasn't much over 5 flat when he needed to get up and go, but then agian he was well over 300 lbs.
