Somerset looked good! At first the scrimmage was set up 10 plays/10 plays with the ball always being placed on the 50 yard line. Somerset ran the ball probably 80-90% fairly successful with Kenny Hughes and Chad Shoemaker. Cobb didn't show much with the passing game at this point. Somerset's D looked good moving to the ball well. Next the JV teams played the same format. After the JV teams the Varsity teams came back out and played a real game format minus kickoffs/punts. At this time Coach Cobb opened the passing game up scoring on both of Somerset's possessions (Cole/Hughes). Somerset won this format 2-0. Then NL went on offense from the 10 yard line twice, 1st possession Somerset's D stopped them on 4th down on the 5 yard line. SL's 2nd possession they scored I believe on 4th down on a very nice pass from the QB. Somerset didn't go back on offense after that. I would give Somerset a strong "B" to "B+" performance.

Glad to see some of the one year players doing good. How was the line play, I heard there are some holes that need filled, the guards? How did hughes shoulder hold up? The D-Line, who started and how'd they play?

Line play looked fine to me but I was mostly watching Hughes, Shoemaker, Cole, and Coomer. Kenny's shoulder seemed to hold up fine, he had some very nice punishing runs up the middle. Sorry I don't know the names of the linemen yet but I will, don't be to upset with me----I knew your name...:ylsuper:

Hughes looked really good, ran strong for positive yards all night. First couple of offensive series he was back at half back, then later was up at full back. O line looked pretty good for first contact. D line pursued well and shut down the middle most of the night. Jags had a nice pass and catch for a long gain and one of their QB's got some scramble yards. They did not get a whole lot running the ball. Jags looked pretty good however, and should do well this year.

Let me say this about John Cole. I was one of the officials tonight and got to see him up close. This kid is the real deal, no doubt whatsoever! He is the best HS receiver I have seen since witnessing Randy Moss firsthand in WV. I am not saying he is Moss, but this kid is excellent. Decent size, outstanding speed and quickness, runs great patterns, great leaping ability and first class hands.

He is also a first rate kid on the field. He was the best player on the field for either team tonight, hands down. I like the big fullback #30 as well. Big strong runner who will take tacklers with him.

I was impressed with some of NL's new coaches. Roark is Mr Enthusiasm and you can tell he loves the game and loves the kids. GREAT pickup for the NL staff. Give this staff time and they will have a solid program at NL.

All in all a very good scrimmage. NL broke some big plays but only managed 2 TD's. Again, I cannot emphasize just how good John Cole is. It was perfectly clear to me why Stanford and other big schools want him. I would LOVE for UK to go after this kid. A big time player IMHO.

I want to see him play. If he's better than McBroom and/or another unmentioned WR on the high school level, then I'm even more of a fan of Mr. Cole.

I never saw McBroom up close, but heard he was awesome. Looked to be from highlights. However, I can only speak from what I saw, and Cole is a D1 level WR IMHO.

I agree. Cole is one heck of a player/prospect. With all the hype, I was a little skeptical, but after seeing him, he is one kid who playes up to the hype. I would love it if UK gets him.

I was with you. My dad had seen him several times and talked about him being the real deal. I got to see it for myself Friday. I am sure Coach Cobb will do whatever he can to get the ball in his hands as much as possible.

There is absolutely no doubt that Cole is the real deal. I saw a few times where the NL's DB was right on him and he just jumped over and snagged it out of his hands. Any other player, and NL has at least two more picks. He made what appeared to be a pretty good NL secondary look ordinary. If he isn't a factor in any of Somerset's games this year, Jay is to blame.

Cole really sounds remarkable. Can anyone tell me why Louisville and Kentucky are not recruiting him? If he is looking at Stanford (has he already committed?) then he must have excellent grades, and I would expect that schools like Virginia and Duke would be looking at him, too?
