I hated to give up Gabbard but Lester is 2 years younger and has better stuff. Also that must be a pretty good indication that Schilling is sound.

 

 

I liked Gabbard, but as you said earlier, with Gagne in the mix if the staff can give them 5 innings, it's almost a formality that they get a W.

I think the Red Sox are the big winners, getting Gagne and not giving up any of their top prospects / young players.

 

If the Braves win the division and get to the Big Dance this year or next year I'd say they'll like their moves, if not, who knows.

I don't know if I would say they blew it or not, but the Yankees GIVING UP pitching for a position player doesn't make much sense to me.

 

Phillies also did pretty well.

IMO:

 

Winners:

Braves- Added a solid first baseman, and 2 arms for the bullpen.

Red Sox-added another great pitcher to, already, the best bullpen in baseball.

 

 

Losers:

Yankees-Needed bullpen help but wouldn't trade Melky Cabrera to get Gagne, so they traded a pitcher for a infielder.

Angels- Needed to add another big bat but couldn't complete a trade for Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko or Adam Dunn.

The Reds passed on getting the SS from ATL Escobar and Jo Jo for Bronson was surprising somewhat to me.

The updated offer for Arroyo was just Yuneol Escobar. Probably why it wasn't accepted.

From what all I could gather from the t.v. commentators is that the Yankees could had made more moves than the one for Gagne but were unwilling to give up a lot if any top minor league prospects.

The Braves will not make the playoffs this year.

 

If they make it next year, it will be because of Francoeur, McCann, and Johnson and not because of the contributions of Teixeira.

 

Schuerholz has devastatingly harmed the future solely in an effort to win one more division (for his personal hall of fame resume, of course).

 

Teixeira will be gone after next season so the cupboard was emptied for a 14 month rental.

 

Dotel has had arm trouble this year and is a two month rental since he can be a free agent in October.

 

Those who think the Braves didn't give up their future are obviously not familiar with the status of the Braves's farm system. Nor, for that matter, do they have any direct knowledge of Andrus and Harrison. One should be informed rather than a cheerleader if one seeks to analyze a trade. A couple of the above posters are the latter rather than the former.

 

I've been a Braves fan since some guy named Aaron was shagging balls in the Atlanta outfield and I have lots of knowledge of the Braves' farm system. The franchise will be A-OK.

By the way, at the last minute the Rangers slicked your buddy, Schuerholz, out of Beau Jones. The Rangers wouldn't finalize the trade without one more prospect and, since your boy needed to get it done for tonight's game, he surrendered. But, then, you probably know nothing about Beau Jones, do you? Ignorance is bliss.

 

Beau Jones has been compared to Kyle Davies, whose stat line looks like this: 4-8, 5.76 ERA. Davies was a bust and was demoted to Richmond in late July. If Jones is like Davies (and he's still in the low minors, so who knows?), let him go.

 

The Royals are welcome to Davies. I'd rather have Octavio Dotel and his 11 saves in 14 tries. He should do well playing for a team that actually has a chance to win more games than it loses.

I can't imagine who compared Beau Jones to Kyle Davies. Jones is lefthanded and was considered by many to have the best curve ball in the organization. Davies, of course, is righthanded and more of a power pitcher. But, of course, you already knew this. You say the Braves's farm system will be "A-OK". Care to elaborate? Please do so with some knowledgeable facts and information and not general statements like they will draft good prospects because they always do. You claim to know. Prove it.

 

The point is that Schuerholz was hoodwinked into throwing the 22 year old Jones (5-0 with a weak Rome team this year and an ERA under 3.00) into the trade at the last minute. Schuerholz was desperate to get the trade done so he added another of the Braves top 15 prospects.

 

Also, there is nothing wrong with Matt Harrison's arm. That was more manipulation by the Rangers. It sure worked.

 

The late trade with the Padres was no better. The Braves gave up Ledezma (he was gone anyway) and promising Triple A lefthanded reliever, Will Startup, for Royce Ring. Royce Ring sounds like a television evangelist. Of course, the truth is the Braves should have kept first round pick, Macay McBride.

 

By the way, not that mere longevity means much, but I predate your "association" with the Braves. Longevity as a fan is fine. However, to be really knowledgeable you need to have more than that.

 

It is good that you guys are pleased with the changes. We will see what happens, won't we? I will say this. I am not making any reservations in Atlanta. My concentration will be on the minor league affiliates- if there is anyone left after Schuerholz's attempt at personal resume building.

At this time last year there were a ton of moves. Krivsky got killed for them. This year it was the opposite. Or was it? 4th GM in 7 years on the way. Every now and again you get what you asked for. Over and over. Walt Jockety come on down...

I am VERY supprised that Krivsky did not trade Hatteburg and Conine, and either Dunn or Griffey. They have a pretty good farm system, why not make it even better with a year like this with some valuable pieces for a contender, veteran 1st basemen and a pretty young power hitter. I do not understand keeping the same exact team that had one of the worst records in the MLB and not trading any of the hitters for some young bullpen pitchers. I think that the Reds are in need of another GM?
