I think it's silly to say you absolutely have to replace Dunn's production to the tee if he's not here next season. I believe that if we stay this course, you know,,,long ball happy,,,we will continue to lead the league in HR's and battle the Pirates for the cellar. If getting rid of Dunn heads us in a different direction, I'm all for it. For the record, I'm a Dunn fan, but moreover, I'm a Reds fan. I'd rather have Arizona's no name lineup and be in contention rather than have a whose who of those who haven't sniffed the post season.

They obviously never hurt your cause but you can't live and die by them. Dunn is not a guy who lives and dies by the bomb. If so, his OBP% would be about .260. Its not. He does exactly what you need to do to score - hit for power AND get on base.

Well, the problem with projections is that they're not as cut and dried as they may seem on paper. First, for the Reds to contend the main hole to be plugged is pitching, there's never been any argument over that by anyone on this or any other Reds forum. But what you must get offensively IMO, is better production from the guys you do have. BP can step it up even more, E5 has to play like a major leaguer soon, Hamilton has to stay healthy and be a solid contributor, Ross needs to be substantially above the Mendoza. So, offensively, the Reds that are here and will be here next season will have to do a better job taking up the slack in the event the Donkey is gone. Grif will have to stay healthy all season, assuming he returns. We need a leadoff guy not named Freel. Simple really to say, not simple on the field however. But to expect to fill any offensive holes left by a vacating Dunn is not going to be done by one signing this offseason IMO. Some of the guys here that are getting paid ML salaries need to start earning them.

Which is why the Reds will be trading Dunn at the deadline next July. They will pickup Dunn's option, hope the younger pitchers improve in the bullpen and won't be financially able to secure a starter or two from the FA market.

 

The same beatwriter said in response to "which one is more likely to be here on Opening Day - Donkey or Wayne?" that it would be Dunn.
