UK/UL - Live on ESPN Classic and Local Networks

Featured Replies

The reasons for moving the game still have to do with "losing" the game. If UK were winning every other year, it wouldn't have changed. That make them chicken.

Also gives UK more schedule flexibility which you were talking about how important that is in the "Should the Big East expand" thread. If you think the ONLY reason UK wanted to move the game is because they were losing you are crazy.

It doesn't have nearly as much to do with it being on ESPN Classic as it does with it not being the only game in town.

If they feel they have a better chance to win the game where it's at now, then the move makes them smart.

Option#1: Keep game where it is, have better chance of losing.

Option#2: Move game to later in season, gives team better chance of winning.

If you're an AD, you pick the option that gives you're team the best chance of winning.

I don't think it helps them win, it only reduces the negative impact of a loss.

If UK wins game vs nobody#1 a lot more people will attend game 2 vs nobody#2 and then UK will get a full house for the Louisville game.

If UK get a full house for the Louisville game and loses in bad fashion they may see a reduction in attendance by 10 to 15% for games vs nobody #1 and #2.

The idea is to reduce the impact of the loss. I think Barnhart while not necesarily wanting to be off national TV was willing to forgo the oppritunity for this purpose. Fan and media reaction shamed him and the program to get this on ESPN classic. In a way this is a great sign for UK. The fans are finally making an impact on the standards of the program.

But it's still chicken.

Doubtful and I'll tell you why. Last season after getting beat in Louisville UK had a crowd of 57,136 for their first home game against Texas St. Followed by 60,338 at a game against Ole Miss. After getting beat by Florida in Gainesville UK played Central Michigan and had a crowd of 54,556. UK followed up that game by having a crowd of 61,449 for the South Carolina game on ESPN2. The game against Georiga they had 62,120 and followed that by having 52,235 at the game against Vandy. The last home game of the season brought in a crowd of 53,463.

So what I'm getting at is that after losing the season opener to Louisville we bring in 57,136 to a home game. That's pretty good after a loss, home opener may have had something to do with it. But UK followed up that game by bringing in 60,338. After the loss to Florida, their next home game they had 54,000+. Then after 2 straight losses (South Carolina, LSU) and a win against Miss. St. They have a crowd of over 62,000 at the Georgia home game.

Point being is that no matter whether they win or lose the game to Louisville they probably will not see a 10-15% decrease in attendance. UK's fan base is pretty consistent. Although there was only 53,463 at the last home game. That's pretty sad.

I'm not sure it gives them a better chance to win either, but if the "big wigs" in the program think it does, then you have to do what's best for your school. The only people who are saying it's a chicken move are UofL fans, who I'm sure the UK AD cares so much about...

Those facts don't make my opinion any different. Your capacity is 67,606, had you beat Louisville last season I think you would have had closer to 65,000 attend the Texas State game.

I think many UK fans were upset about the move. They won't call thier own program chicken like thier rival will, but they aren't happy with it either.

OK I can agree with that. Yeah I think if they woulda beat Louisville then they would have a bigger home crowd but I just disagreed about the losses hurting their attendance at home.

I don't think so. Most rational UK fans were fine with the move because they know it isn't going to have much affect at all on the outcome and if the UK Powers want to move it, so be it.

Being on TV was not nearly as big concern as it has been spun. Most non ticket holders held a high hope that it would be picked up, and in the end, it was.

Being the only game in the time slot (and thus a bigger audience) was the only real concern, but that was not nearly as big a deal as some have tried to imply.

And the small negative of that, to be honest, was outweighed in the minds of many UK fans by the bonus of it being such a thorn in the side for so many whining UL fans. I know for a fact that it has been a source of laughter for a LOT of UK fans that UL fans have been so torn up over such a non issue.

I don't like to take sides in these UK/UL issues for the most part because even though I am deeply Blue, I hold no disdain for the Cards and other than one game a year, like to see them win. But I gotta say that for a program who has been far superior in every sense of the word, the team with the mostest in this series, the UL fans letting something as trivial as two weeks and a time slot work you guys into such a tizzie is not very becomming from the outside looking in.

If the Cards fans are as comfortably seated in the catbird seat as they claim to be, it would seem they would just make like a duck over this issue and go out and TCB. Instead we keep hearing that same old noise from out of the west. And from here, it is comical.

Watusi you know I am only debateing the details here for fun and personal amusement, I wish could actually start talking about the game but it is so far out there for that.

But here is my devils advocate to your post.

Joe B. Hall and Darrell Bird from the Cats pause and the Red and Blue review disagree. Both of them on their own shows said that the limiting exposure was really bad for UK's National fan base, most of whom do not have ESPN Classic. Both mentioned that when the decision was made even though they didn't know Petrino was going to be gone, Micheal Bush and possibly Brohm would be gone too and they would have the best group of Seniors they have had since Brooks took over back. This year was the year they had marked down to actually beat the Cards and then they gave up an ESPN or ESPN2 slot. Hall said he disagreed with it, Darrel Bird said that most Cats fans disagree with it but that Barnhart backs his coach. You can listen to the Joe B. and Denny show and call in about it or you can watch the last episode of the Red and Blue review if you need a cite. Call Joe B. a Cardinal fan and see what happens:fire: .

Hypothetical: Suppose UT wanted to switch the '08 UK game to Nov. 15, because they were able to make a big ABC deal to play the UF game the Saturday after Thanksgiving? It's just two weeks and a time slot. To hell with tradition.

ram, I know there are fans who take that stance, but I don't think it is very widespread, and definitely not a majority. Even so, its not the first time I have disagreed with Joe B and Darrell.

And Jim, moving the UT game, or any game for that matter, wouldn't bother me at all. Playing UT last, while traditional, isn't something near and dear to my heart.
