Somerset vs Mercer Co. Sat. Night?

Featured Replies

What is Somerset expecting to have this season? Is it too early to talk about match-ups? I know Mercer lost alot of kids off of last years squad including their top 3 backs. New Qb to work with, entirely new secondary, lost a couple of very good linebackers, but both lines will pretty much be the same as last year, almost. They will have good team speed but not like they had last season. I'm just needing my football fix.

I thought Jackson and Ford were juniors last year.

This thread was about whether the Somerset-Mercer game is on Friday or Saturday. No one is forcing the county schools to play in the Correll Bowl, they can choose to skip it if having to drive either 1 or 5 miles to play a school half their size is too much of an advantage for Somerset. This is football, the fields are all the same dimensions and there's no travel involved so it only makes sense to play it at the largest/nicest venue. Both Pulaski and Southwestern have much larger schools so they should have larger crowds too--that should negate any advantage Somerset has by getting to use their own locker room. Somerset has more than held their own in the series with both county schools, they don't have to make any apologies for who they play.

I did not say a word about the county schools not playing in the Correll Bowl. Yes, I know that PC and SW are much larger schools than Somerset and should give them an advantage. I just want to see good competitive football games between local schools. But you are sadly mistaken if you don't believe that playing on your Home Field is an advantage.

You are correct that Somerset has had a great amount of success against the two county schools. No one is arguing that.

I am tired of hearing excuses that Somerset doesn't want to play against two much larger schools in the same season, and then they schedule a team like Mercer Co. (Last year - Warren East)

If I was a Southwestern or PC fan I would be in favor of the Ray Correll bowl. If one of these two schools got to where they were consistently losing every year to their much smaller cross town rival it could be very harmful to the program.

You mean like Pulaski Co. (5-12 vs. Somerset all-time, 1-6 since 1998)?

It came across as not wanting to have to play at Clark Field in the Correll Bowl every year. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing them play each county school each year. As a matter of fact financially I think it would be better if the three schools invited in 3 other schools for the Correll Bowl and played a triple header on Saturday then played a home and home with each other during the year. However I'm not involved in those processes nor do I know if it would be feasible. Either way these discussions usually get turned into how Somerset is afraid to play the two county schools each year (I know you didn't put it that way) and that just isn't the case.

Could be a field issue or maybe Mercer plays on a Saturday the week before...

AJG,

Since you are in BAMA bring me back some Boiled Peanuts.

SHS has had success against both schools (Yes) please don't give me the smaller school rant, its getting old.

Personally, I love the idea of a three game Correll Bowl on Saturday.

Bring in some marquee teams and make a whole day (Celebration) of the whole thing..

Financially, I agee that home and home every year would be a real financial boost to all the teams. Add that to a three game Correll Bowl and think of gate reciepts for those two dates per school.

Yes please stop beating these dead horses as well......

Somerset is affraid to play the county schools....(we play one or the other every year)

Somerset is affraid to play on the road in the county....(build a stadium big enough to hold the crowd, that will actually let you see the game and we will)

Somerset dodges the county schools when they are good.....(be good every year and it wouldn't matter)

Alot of horses get beat around here, I like the proposal to bring in three other teams and have an all-day event and then home and home with PC and SWHS.

Can we now talk about football and not all of this silliness that none of us has control over. :bunny:

AJG,

Well I won't be back to somerset for a while to get them but Cajun sounds pretty good. Let me know how they were. I plan on picking up some next week on my way to Hilton Head.

Jumper Dad play both schools every year and its solved that way too, but anyway...I'm done with that.

Should be a interesting year for all local teams with the new districts.

I'm in Greenville quite a bit too--you won't have any trouble finding some Cajun flavored down there. Are you coming in for the Correll Bowl? If you do give me a shout.

Nope, they both graduated last year. Mercer will have some young speedy backs led by Nathan Grithin who is a strong north and south runner. But, they won't have the speed of the duo from last year.

Not sure yet... When is it?
