9th District Next Year

I'am picking: 1-Ryle 2-Cov Cath 3-Beechwood

Ryle will have plenty of pitching and a strong defense. If they hit, they win.

Pitchers who will make an impact:

Austin Seabald, Dillon Campbell, Cory Rieder, Charlie Lovan, Joe Renda and

David Etcheid. Two very good catchers, Braylan Chandler and Cody Meier.

Very good middle infield, Luke Letherby and Kyle O'Hara. Other impact players will be Steve Helmer, Alex Flishel, Brian Marsh Gus and Nick Murray and Ryan Oliver.

Cov Cath returns 3 experienced pitchers, Dan Niehaus, Isler and Nutini.

Maile returns behind the plate and a pretty good hitter in Ryan Darner as well as SS, Holochor.

Beechwood returns all the youngsters that stepped up last year and had a respectable season. Impact players will be Elliott and Smith on the hill, Chris Miller behind the plate and a pretty good stick, Chris Morris.

The early questions:

1. Ryle - replacing essentially the entire lineup and ALL of their leaders and top hitters. Inexperienced rotation.

2. CCH - Can they come with 2 more starting pitchers? Relief pitchers? Offense should be very strong. Will be starting all juniors in the everyday 8.

3. BW - Who pitches the day Elliott does not? Does their defense get better?

I agree it is not going to be easy to replace the grads from Ryle or CCH, but

I think the level of competition will be fairly equal.

1- Ryle has to develope hitters.

2- CCH has to develope more pitching.

3- Beechwood will have to develope more pitching as well.

I'm under the impression that Ryle has lost the great majority of their starting rotation. Am I correct?

I think early on the edge has to go to both CCH and Beechwood simply because their underclassmen saw more varsity time this past season. That does make a difference, especially early in the year. Ryle has a wealth and depth of talent though and those kids should get up to speed come tournament time. Going to be an interesting year. Beechwood has more pitching than just Elliot in both AJ Smith and Steve Hadden. The 8th grader last season, Bertke, will also win them some games next year. Coach Meyerhoff always seems to be able to find and develop pitching just like Coach K always does at CCH. St. Henry will have to mentioned in there as well since they too had a good number of underclassmen contributing last season and did well in the JV and Frosh tournaments. I have to think there will be somebody sneaking into the top tier this year to crash the BW/Ryle/CCH party in the 9th Region. I seriously don't know who that will be yet, though.

I hope you are correct. I'd love to see it be more competitive at the top. It would make for a great season and tourney.

I do agree that Cov Cath and Ryle should be favored, but to put one ahead of the other at this point would be difficult. Beechwood will also be young overall, but should be a factor. To add to the solid pitching mix for Ryle above you need to throw in Steve Helmer also. He has a live fastball and a nice hook.

I would throw Dixie into the mix....the kids who made the most impact for them when they were on are all coming back. I only remember Nichols name; but the catcher, two pitchers, and the kid with the big hits in the post season were all Jr, Soph, Frosh ...maybe a Red Colonel can clean this up for me?

The catcher for Dixie in the region tourney was a 8th grader ,will be frosh ,if I'm not mistaken .Brad Popham

Correct. Brad will be a FROSH. He's already caused the family of one incoming 8th grader to question if their boy will get a shot to play catcher.

Dixie has a solid incoming FROSH class - not world beaters but very solid.

What does Highlands have coming back after making great strides this year?

I believe they had some young talent plus I'd expect some who sat in the stands thinking baseball at HHS was not cool to reevaluate the program.

It will be interesting to see how all of the SENIOR leadership at both CCH and

Ryle is replaced next year. Lot's of talent in both CCH and Ryle's soph. classes last year. The seniors for both CCH and Ryle set the pace last year.

Will both teams have solid senior leadership next year?

Don't overlook Beechwood. They have four nice pitchers that all pitched on the 23 win '07 team. They have the bats, experience (lost 1 sr.) and the

toughness to compete. With Nichols on the mound next year, Dixie will be tough. They will be back in the hunt in '08.

Ninth region looks to be wide open!!!
