June 16, 200719 yr Given that and the option void with a trade, Dunn is not going to bring a proven set-up man or closer in any deal IMO... I dont think Krivsky should be looking for a closer. He is not going to get it. You are better off trying the FA market or developing one. If they trade Dunn, I would accept high valued prospects. Third baseman, shortstop, or even catcher...and any one that can throw hard.

But this early in the trading season it's a good idea to set the price very high.....
June 16, 200719 yr Good read. I agree with most of it except the author seems to not place high value on middle relievers and closers. Everyone wants em, just ask Houston about inquiries over Lidge. Closers/middle setup guys are worth more now in the game than ever due to starters not going as long as they did 15 years ago.And, as the author pointed out, that was the attitude that caused the Reds to make a disastrous deal last year.

June 16, 200719 yr If they're going to get 25 cents on the dollar for him wouldn't they be better off to exercise his option and hope that they can contend in the wasteland that is the NL Central? Then if they drop out of the race they can trade him for prospects or whatever. I just don't see the Reds being able to better themselves by getting rid of Dunn for nothing.

The point is that Krivsky overvalued middle relief last year, prompting him to make a deal where he got very little for two guys that gave him some bargaining chips in trade talks.

He got two middle relievers that at the time of the trade had a lot of value. And he got them from the only guy in baseball looking to trade young bullpen arms. I'll still never get why people think Kearns and Lopez had much "worth"...
June 16, 200719 yr Not sure if it is the "worth" of what Kearns and Lopez, but it is the value they got in return. Very lopsided trade, at this point and many questioned it last year. Kriv also slightly overvalued Cormier as well....who the Reds got for...Germano? I actually tried to defend that trade, but that may have been one of the worst ones.

There's a good chance that the Reds could have gotten more value if they had shopped around. Bray may have some long-term value. Majewski was a run-of-the-mill middle reliever that had been worked awfully hard in 1 1/2 seasons in the majors. The Reds goofed, plain and simple, and some of us knew it at the time.
