June 16, 200719 yr One problem is that there aren't many/any very good leadoff hitters anymore. By today's standards, Freel isn't bad. Using last season's numbers, he's up near the top in steals. He got on base at a decent clip - actually pretty high for actual leadoff hitters in the NL.

I know I haven't heard anyone say this, but I wouldn't mind seeing Brandon Phillips being the leadoff guy. He is a guy who I think could do very well at the leadoff spot, or atleast would be one of the better options on this team IMO...

Freel obviously hasn't been that effective, and BP gets behind in the count too much. I like the idea of Hamilton as stated earlier.

As Cshs said Freel actually was pretty high up there in stats when it comes to leadoff hitters in the NL. So is your reasoning for Freel not being that effective because Dunn wasn't driving runs in with Freel leading off, so that must mean the leadoff hitter was not doing good??? I dont know the exact stats, but from the games I watch it seems like Hamilton does a pretty decent job at hitting runners when they are in scoring position, and he is only going to get better at that, the more experience he gets while playing in the big leagues. So I know I would rather have Hamilton be there to drive in runs, than not having really anyone to drive in, which would be the case if he leads off...

June 16, 200719 yr Agreed. However, who is a true pure leadoff hitter? Some that come to mind are W. Taveras, J. Rollins, S. Posednik, Ichiro, R. Furcal, J. Lugo, J. Damon (at least he was), C. Figgins, and J. Reyes.
