I do know, that the only day available to the Colonels over the course of the next two weeks is Monday. The Colonels play the Midland Indians on Tuesday at St. Henry (6:30pm), then go on the road to Memphis to play in the Mid-American World Series. From there, they go straight from Memphis to Nashville, to play in the Sandlot World Series, to end the season.

I really don't know, but it just might have something to do with playing so many games in the SWOL Baseball League. That would be my guess.

Knowing the coaching staff for the Royals I don't believe that in a summer game they (that is not a final game to win a tournament anyway) would "pitch around" a batter on purpose. Now, they may tell the pitcher to try to make good pitches, nothing up or out over the plate, but knowing the Royals coaching staff I am confident they didn't instruct Hurd to give him nothing to hit. To me there is big difference in "pitching around" a hitter or just trying to make good pitches. Maile is quite a ball player though, did you happen to see the ball he almost caught late in the second game while playing 3rd, it was a line shot and from my vantage point it looked like he jumped 15 feet in the air to almost snag it?

 

I enjoyed games yesterday and while the second game was fun to watch I felt the fielding by both teams was a little shaky all day, especially in the outfield. I don't know if the outfielders where have a difficult time picking up the ball in the high sky, but alot of balls hit deep were giving the guys fits.

Hurd pitched up and in on one at bat then made a very good pitch on the outside corner that could have been called a strike.

1) Won't disagree about Hurd deserving a better fate, but why keep him in the game after 107 pitches in this heat?

 

2) Won't argue with you about the call at first, but the man in Blue said safe, that's all I know from my seat behind the plate.

4) Not sure why you would think a pitcher would intentionally hit a batter in the top of the seventh inning, with no outs and only up two runs? If it were me, I wouldn't be doing it, as HBP can come back to bite you in the butt, as this one almost did.

 

It was an exciting game, that I enjoyed quite a bit, and I was glad to see Conner and Kyle playing well. Hopefully the Royals continue to play well during the rest of the season....

I will only tell you that I have first hand source to tell you that he did not pitch around Maile. Three of those pitches were on the not intentional intentional walk before they sent him to first which like I said earlier Hurd did not want to do, and you may or may not have noticed him shake his head no toward the dugout. But the coaches said yes anyway, and when he got to the dugout they told him that it was because the infield was having a hard time catching anything clean and throwing them out at first so they set up the force at anybase. Hurd told me that Shanks was hitting as good as Maile so why pitch around one to get to the other. He also told me that two pitches could have been called strikes whether they were or not doesn't matter, Hurd's view was probably better than yours. All pitches were around the plate except for the one up and in.

I admire your loyalty to the Ky Colonels and the CC Colonels but your getting a little heavy with the Maile stuff, he is a great player but he is not a first ballot hall of famer yet. Maybe some day.

One thing to remember about me, I don't have a son, so I really see the games different than the Coaches, Parents, and or even the Players.

Yes, I like Luke, but also the rest of the kids on both the Colonels (Ky & CovCath), and Royals, and I think I showed you that when I went to the Royals game at Wabash College, in Ind. The Colonel fans at the NKU games, will tell you that I rooted hard (and took some friendly ribbing for doing it) for both Kyle, and Lark, as both young men and there families have been so nice to me over the years, and the families and their son's mean a awful lot to me. :thumb:

Coach Listerman of CovCath would have been smiling from ear to ear if he had seen how high Luke got off the ground trying to get that ball. My guess is that dunking the ball this year will be no problem for Luke.

Old guy......Sorry for the late post about Corey and his Midland Catching situation.....It's actually a 1A and 1B type deal. They have 3 maybe 4 catchers on the roster to be exact. Corey and a guy from Moeller can't remember the name but he is attending Ohio State next year share the catching duties on a regular basis. From Corey, him and the Ohio State guy switch off regularly and during the tournaments. The other kid that catches is a brother of one of Midlands stud players. It was a package deal between the 2 brothers so the stud could get on the team. Corey told me they try to get him behind the plate whenever possible. He said the coaches also for Coreys versatility play him in the Outfield whenever he is not catching, just so he can get some work in out there since he may be playing in the OF at the next level...Just giving you guys some info.

The Colonels played the Midland Indians at St. Henry this evening (July 10th) and beat the 17 year olds by a score of 6-2. The Colonels pitched a slew of young men as with the number of games they have coming up this and next week I am sure that Walt and the coaches, didn't want to over use anyone.

 

Starting for the Colonels was Nick Ryan and his number were:

3 innings, 37 pitches, 1 walk, 1 hbp, 1 strike out, 1 hit and no runs allowed

 

Next up was Brad Krohman and his numbers were:

1 inning, 19 pitches, 0 walks, 2 strike outs, 2 hits and gave up 2 runs, both earned

 

Next on the mound was Zach Isler and Ice numbers were:

2 innings, 20 pitches, 0 walks, 0 strike outs, 1 hit, and no runs given up

 

The final pitcher for the Colonels was Clint Hoskins and his numbers were:

1 inning, 17 pitches, 1 walks, 0 strike outs, 1 hit, and no runs given up

 

Hitters for the Colonels today were:

 

Elliott 2-3, triple, reached base via error (6), 1 sb, and 2 runs scored

Shanks 2-3, double, 1 run scored, and 2 rbi's

I know that I talk a lot about Maile, but when you watch this young man hit a baseball day after day, you start to believe that no one can stop him. First at bat he flew out to deep CF, then in the 3rd hit a rocket to deep right center for a triple and two rbi's. Finlay in his last at bat with a 3-2 count and after fouling off a pitch, the Midland pitcher thought he could get one past Maile, but Luke sent it over the 390 mark the deepest part of St. Henry outfield and beyond. I keep telling people, the kid can hit....

 

The Colonels looked as good tonight, as I have seen them all season long. Yes, this was the Midland 17 year old team, but these players from Midland aren't just your average neighborhood kids.....

 

Elliott, Shanks, Maile, and Isler are each hitting the ball as if it were the size of a watermelon. They are really striking it hard and where the "D" isn't playing.

 

The best play of the game was with Midland having a runner on third and only 1 out. The batter hit a shot that Nick Ryan made a great stop on, as the runner was going home, Nick then threw to Maile and the runner was a dead duck. Maile ran him back to third and then threw the ball to Brad Krohman who tagged out the runner. Outstanding play and it took the wind out of the sails of the Midland nine.

 

Another nice play in the game was when Rick Parrott took a sure single away from a Midland player, by gobbling up a ground ball up the middle and then making a strong throw to Josh Bleser at first. A bang, bang play.

 

The Colonels leave Thursday morning to play in Memphis and Nashville. When I get the schedule, I will post it on line.....

I was glad to see Corry playing the outfield, and hitting so well. Great kid and he will be playing at the next level one day. As I have stated time after time, the outfield or second base is where he is going to be playing at the next level. I will stand on my posting about the Midland catchers, that I saw the other day, they really didn't impress me...

It was interesting to see Midland using wooden bats which made the HR by #19 even more impressive. It probably cost them some hits but will make the batters better hitters.

 

I really like Shanks . TMC is getting a very good player . He may be better than Patrick Allen overall. That's 2 good players TMC is getting.

cshs81, I loved watching the one bat literally break into two pieces when the pitcher threw it inside, and the batter hit it off the handle.

 

Will agree with you about Shanks, he has impressed me a lot. The young man has a cannon for a arm, and is so very, very strong..... TMC got a great one.

 

Too bad NKU doesn't recruit more NKy kids to play for them. Really don't understand why a young man like Parrott or even Blaze of CovCath last year, weren't good enough for them. Seems that signing some local kids just might help put some fans in Champion Window Field which seems might empty when I go watch them play.
