The Colonels won the game over the Cardinals 5-3. Despite the win, the Colonels made it a close game by giving them 3 runs, all of which were unearned.

 

Craig Shanks was the starting pitcher and went 5 strong innings giving up 3 runs, 0 ER. Cody Elliot came in to relieve and went the last two innings. Apparently he hit 91 MPH on the gun which is some heat:flame:

 

Craig Shanks had a crucial 2-run double with 2 outs in the fourth to put them up for good. I would say who else produced for the Colonels but it has been a long trip home and my memory is a little foggy at the moment!

The Kentucky Colonles lost a double header today against the Columbus Sharks and the LID Bulls from Indianapolis. The Colonels starting pitchers did an outstanding job of holding the Bull and the Sharks but the Colonels bats were rather quiet. Both games today were played at the Marge Schott Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati and was with out a doubt in my mind, the best field/stadium I have seen a baseball game this season. far nicer than UofL or Purdue.

In Tuesdays July 3rd first game the Colonles found themselves up against the Columbus Sharks. Starting for the Colonels was Adam Glicrest who pitched an outstanding 8 2/3 innings of baseball today. The one run that Gilgrest gave up was a 360 foot HR over the left field fence, but other than that Gilly pitched outstanding. Elliott came in to pitch to one batter in the eight and pitched the ninth inning. The one run that he gave up was an unearned one.

 

Gilcrest's numbers for the day were:

 

8 2/3 innings, 94 pitches, 1 walk, struck out 6, gave up 6 hits and 1 run, which was earned.

 

1 1/3 innings Elliott's numbers for the day were:

The only bright spot at the plate in the first game for the Colonles was Brad Krohman second inning HR that traveled around 345 over the left field fence. Good bit of hitting by Brad as he took the pitcher deep on a 1 ball 2 strike count.

 

The Colonels again by not playing small ball, cost themselves a game today. In the eight inning both Holocher, and N. Ryan put up back to back singles with no one out, but the Colonels could not only move the runner's up, but couldn't get them across the plate either. Really to bad too, as the Colonles wasted a very fine outing by Gilcrest today.

The second game of the day found the Colonels again not hitting the ball, and again found their starting pitcher throwing an outstanding game. Zach Isler pitched the best game that I have seen him pitch since the Tommy John injury which kept him from pitching most of this high school season. Ice moved the ball all around the plate, changed speeds, and threw one curve which earned him his only strike out. Really an outstanding game by this young man who has battled back from an injury, that not all that long ago would have kept him from every pitching again. Mark Reed pitched the last inning and got the lost.

 

Isler's numbers for the game were:

 

6 innings, 88 pitches, 2 walks, 1 strike out, 1 hbp, 7 hits, and gave up 1 run, which was earned.

 

Reed's number for the game were:

 

29 pitches, 1 walk, 1 strike out, 3 hits, and gave up 2 runs, which were both earned.

Colonles notes:

 

Maile who hit shots to left center and right center, showed some speed on the base paths today by legging out two triples. Too bad neither time could the Colonels push him across the plate for a run. In the first Maile got his triple with two outs and in the third there was only one out, and neither time could the next batters get Maile across the plate.

 

Holocher was the only batter who got hits in both games today for the Colonels. The young man got a single in the eight in game one, and a single and a rbi in the second to knock in the only run of the second game.

 

Really can't say enough about the effort of both Gilcrest and Isler on the mound today. Both deserved a better fate....

Has Nathan Mutsch been given the ball much this summer?

Nathan Mutsch is out for the season as he came down with Mono about 2 weeks ago.

 

He is not allowed to play until the 1st or 2nd week of August

The fourth of July found the Colonels splitting a doubleheader at Patterson Park with again some very good pitching and finally some timely hitting.

The Colonles lost to Patterson Park by a score of 5-4 and beat the Columbus Braves 3-2.

In the first game on the fourth the Colonels lost to Patterson Park behind a good performance by Nick Ryan, that is after the first inning. In the first Ryan allowed 5 runs on three HR but after that shut down the Patterson team allowing only 3 more hits. Note: If you haven't been to Patterson Park Ball Park before the outfield fence can't be more that 290 feet all around the outfield.

Colonles had a total of 11 hits today, but left an amazing 12 men on base in the game.

 

The fans in the stands were constantly under attack today by foul balls hit from the field adjacent to the one the Colonels were playing on. Really lucky no one got hurt, as ball after ball came into the stands from over the backstop of the other field. Sort of made you keep one eye on the Colonels game and the other on the game on the other field....

In game two on the fourth the Colonels beat the Columbus Braves by a score of 3-2 behind a outstanding effort by Clint Hoskins. Clint pitched a complete game of 8 innings of baseball. Great game young man....

Colonel notes:

 

Cody Elliott and Luke Maile are a ton of fun watching them hit the ball. In the bottom of the seventh, with a 3-1 count and the Colonels down by one, Maile hits a HR, that when it left the bat, everybody knew it was gone. While the fences at Patterson Park are extremely short, this HR would have been out at most ball parks. Elliott with the bases loaded and no outs and also with a 3-1 count, hits a shot to deep left center for a double, to knock in the tying and go ahead run, to win the game for the Colonels.

 

Outstanding play in the field by Tyler Holocher who was playing third at the time. He took a sure double and saved a run by making a stop of a hard hit grounder that went right over third and turned it into a out, nice play. Another nice play in the game was a ground ball that looked like it hit the rubber and then went toward right field for what many I am sure thought was going to be a base hit, but Rick Parrott was able to change his direction get his glove on the ball and enough juice on it to turn this sure hit into a out. Nice play indeed....

 

Next up for the Colonels is a game today (July 5) vs. the Midland Braves at 6:30pm at the Midland Complex.

Has Nathan Mutsch been given the ball much this summer?

 

Nathan and his Mom and Dad were at the second game rooting on the Colonels at Patterson Park today. Nathan looked tired, and his Dad said he was bummed, about not being able to play baseball this summer......

Colonels lost in the bottom of the 7th against the Midland Redskins tonight. Enjoyable night of baseball in a first class baseball facility.

 

Nichols will clearly be the #1 pitcher in NKY next season. He pitched an outstanding game against a team that had , by my count, at least 5 players who will play D1 next season (UK,Miami O, Ohio State, , Louisville, OK State) plus a kid who is expected to be a high #1 pick in next year's MLB draft and a SS from Miami that is very strong. Nichols controlled them pretty well.

 

Midland pitched a kid that will be attending AZ State next year and got some good licks in on him.

 

Mark Reed is not going to hear the end of it from Cory Farris after Farris threw him out trying for a double.

One more thing: I didn't realize how strong of an arm Shanks has. He threw a seed to first tonight on a slow grounder. Very impressive.

 

On a side note, someone needs to pull him aside and tell him its not good form to show up a teammate who apparently missed the hit-and-run sign by staring him down and shaking your head as you run off the field.

The Midland team really has some elite talent. In addition to those listed above, they had a kid from Hillsborough High in Tampa (Gooden , Sheffield alma mater) until he was drafted #49 overall by the Nationals and is now in their system.

 

Tonight's pitcher from Chicago will either attend AZ State or sign with the Cardinals (12th round pick).

 

A kid out of Connecticut would have been a first-round pick but his agent Scott Boras scared teams so he ended up going 118th to the Angels. He is a UNC signee.

 

A kid that would have played for Midland again this year , Ryan Dent, signed with the Red Sox after being picked #62.

 

Another pitcher from IL is heading to AZ State as well.

 

Another pitcher from Michigan has signed with Notre Dame.

The Kentucky Colonels lost a game that they should have won tonight and indeed Matt Nichols pitched an outstanding game as cshs81 mentioned above. Sloppy base running, and a error, all in the seventh inning, cost the Colonels the game tonight against one of the best teams in the Country. Nichols in this posters opinion will be getting some heady offers next season.

The Colonles were tied three to three in the top of the seventh, when a batter gets a base hit and tries to leg it into a double, but Farris throws him out. The next Colonel walks, but gets thrown out trying to steal. The next batter walks, so now instead of the bases being loaded and no outs we have one on and two outs. Parrott gets a hit, and then Jim Ryan drives in a run to put the Colonles up by one, when they would have had a least two runs score and still no outs. Really a sloppy way especially at this level to lose a baseball game against one of the best teams in the Country.

 

Correy Farris numbers today were:

He played left field and must be the third string catcher as Midland played two catchers tonight and neither impressed me at all. In fact the starting catcher was having a huge problem in blocking balls, and letting balls get by him.

 

I was extremely disappointed tonight in the play of the Colonles, as really this was a game that the Colonels should have won, as Nichols indeed pitched an outstanding game, and the play of the team except in the seventh proved they could play with Midland.

 

My guess Midland just might have four kids on their team from NKy next year. Farris, Nichols, Elliott, and Maile..... The three who aren't on that team this year, are as good as any player that I saw on the diamond tonight.
