Colonels lost in the bottom of the 7th against the Midland Redskins tonight. Enjoyable night of baseball in a first class baseball facility.

 

Nichols will clearly be the #1 pitcher in NKY next season. He pitched an outstanding game against a team that had , by my count, at least 5 players who will play D1 next season (UK,Miami O, Ohio State, , Louisville, OK State) plus a kid who is expected to be a high #1 pick in next year's MLB draft and a SS from Miami that is very strong. Nichols controlled them pretty well.

 

Midland pitched a kid that will be attending AZ State next year and got some good licks in on him.

 

Mark Reed is not going to hear the end of it from Cory Farris after Farris threw him out trying for a double.

The kid who homered tonight for Midland is Eric Hosmer from Miami. He is rated the #1 high school prospect by some services.

Sorry type-0 on my part. He got a base hit in the second inning, went to second on a wild pitch, struck out in the 4th on a 1-2 pitch, then walked, and was thrown out at second on the play that cshs81 talked about.

While I am never glad to see a young man hurt, I am glad that is what happened, as he was having all kinds of trouble trying to catch the ball. I just couldn't believe that a catcher who was playing for Midland would look so bad..... Thanks for the info....

I must say after watching both pitch more than just once this summer season, Nichols has really impressed me more. I think one of the reasons was that Cody was playing a lot of summer football earlier in the summer season, as the starting QB of Beechwood. Both have been very, very good this year....

 

You will not want to miss the Beechwood vs. Dixie game in this upcoming baseball season if these two outstanding pitchers go head to head. Hopefully it will happen and at the new Dixie ball field.... Will be a outstanding pitchers duel.....

Luke Maile hit .333 for the Covington Catholic High School baseball team last year - as a freshman.

It's rare when a freshman starts for the Colonels, much less finish among the team leaders in batting average, total bases and runs batted in.

 

But Maile proved it wasn't a fluke by coming back with a sensational sophomore season this spring and was named Player of the Year by The Kentucky Post.

 

"I'm kind of surprised. That's the first thing that comes to mind after hearing I won this award," Maile said. "I didn't go into this year with any expectations, but I matured a lot over the winter and I started swinging at better pitches and learned to accept walks. And I think walking a lot helped my batting average."

BTW, the Kentucky Colonels have a total of five sophomores on their team this season. Besides Maile, you have Darner, Holocher, Isler, and Nutini, all of who will be playing for CovCath as juniors next season. Nutini and Isler are doing especially well, both at the plate and on the mound, while Holocher is playing some at short and played a very good game the other day at third. Darner has had some injuries that has kept him off the field, but prior to that was hitting rather well......

The Colonles travel north today (July 6) to play the Cincinnati Falcons at Fenwick High School in Franklin, Ohio at 6:30pm.

 

Saturday July 7 the Colonels travel to Grant County High School to play a DH against the Kentucky Hawks at 10:00am and 12:30.

 

Sunday July 8 the Colonles play the Kentucky Royals in a DH at 1:00 and 3:00pm at NKU....

The Kentucky Colonels lost a game that they should have won tonight and indeed Matt Nichols pitched an outstanding game as cshs81 mentioned above. Sloppy base running, and a error, all in the seventh inning, cost the Colonels the game tonight against one of the best teams in the Country. Nichols in this posters opinion will be getting some heady offers next season.

Colonel notes:

 

The Colonles were tied three to three in the top of the seventh, when a batter gets a base hit and tries to leg it into a double, but Farris throws him out. The next Colonel walks, but gets thrown out trying to steal. The next batter walks, so now instead of the bases being loaded and no outs we have one on and two outs. Parrott gets a hit, and then Jim Ryan drives in a run to put the Colonles up by one, when they would have had a least two runs score and still no outs. Really a sloppy way especially at this level to lose a baseball game against one of the best teams in the Country.

I was extremely disappointed tonight in the play of the Colonles, as really this was a game that the Colonels should have won, as Nichols indeed pitched an outstanding game, and the play of the team except in the seventh proved they could play with Midland.

 

My guess Midland just might have four kids on their team from NKy next year. Farris, Nichols, Elliott, and Maile..... The three who aren't on that team this year, are as good as any player that I saw on the diamond tonight.

 

 

I'm curious as why you think these young men would be playing for Midland next year rather than return and play for Walt. Having been around the Colonels the last five years I don't think Walt or Denny would be very appreciative giving these sophomores a real opportunity this summer and then have them jump to another team next year.

At most, you might see one of them eventually play for Midland. However, I think Walt would understand if that happened as no boy owes anything to any coach beyond the season they committed to.

 

Nichols is good even if he's got a JV team behind him. He put it to some boys last night that are D1 baseball players. The dads of some of the Midland boys were very impressed and they see a lot of top pitchers from around the country.

No knock did I intend, or mean to give the Kentucky Colonels at all, and Walt is a wonderful teacher and coach, but if you have the opportunity to play for Midland you take it, and my guess is Walt and the other Coaches would be happy for them. Would you turn down a offer for a better paying job, that gave you a couple of hundred dollars a week more, just because your boss was nice to you? The three young men Elliott, Maile and Nickols could very easily play for Midland, now will they get the offer? That is the 64 million dollar question, but each no doubt has the ability to play with the best Midland has to offer, and I personally think that if given the chance would, and should. Remember Farris was the POY of the year as a sophomore in the Ninth Region and this year Maile matched him. Elliott can throw big time, can hit for power, and average, and runs like the wind, three things that make a great baseball player. Nickols, well I am sure that the Redskins Coaches liked what they saw of him yesterday...

 

BTW, Nickols showed that he can dominate a high school team, (see HHS in the Ninth Region first round game) but you are correct Matt can take Dixie only so far.

The Kentucky Colonels defeated the Cincinnati Falcons tonight behind a tremendous effort by Craig Shanks. Shanks went seven complete innings tonight, throwing a three hitter, and shutting out the Falcons.

Colonel notes:

 

Unlike the game Thursday night against Midland, this game was over in less than an hour and a half. Quick game indeed, as I got home from Franklin, Ohio tonight, before the game against Midland was even over on Thursday.

 

Krohman HR was a no doubter and it cleared the fence in left center by a good ten to fifteen feet. Asked a couple of other fans about the distance as the field had no markers stating how far the fences were from home plate, so the 370 is just a educated guess.

 

Shanks was in complete control and only twice and those were in the first and seventh inning did the Falcons get a runner to third base. No way tonight did you get a feeling that the Falcons were going to score.

 

The Kentucky Colonels now are 23-14-1 and when you consider that of the twenty players, five are from the class of 2009, six are from the class of 2008, and only nine are from the 2007 class playing for an 18 year old team is a pretty outstanding. Also, when you look at who the Colonels are playing week in and week out, this seaon has been a huge success.....

I assume Shanks pitched for the Crusaders this year. He seems to have a strong arm.
