Colonels played two today, against the Kentucky Hawks and easily won both games by scores of 10-0 and 11-1. Brad Krohman pitched the first game and Ben Kuebbing pitched the second game and neither had any trouble at all. I didn't arrive until the 4th inning of the first game so I don't have any stats on the first game at all, and I won't post the stats on the second game either. Just wasn't much of a game competitively that is.....

Was impressed with the Hawks starting catcher. The young man (#9) played hard, even though he caught both games, and he didn't allow himself to get down, even though his team was clearly not on the same level of play as the Colonles. Good luck to you #9 you played hard, and tried your best.

The Colonels and the Royals played two games today at NKU and the Colonels won both by scores of 12-1 in 6 innings, and 10-8. The second game of the day was the most exciting one, as Brad Krohman hit a walk off HR 375 feet over the left field fence to end the game in favor of the Colonels.

First game of the day on Sunday July 8th saw the Colonels 10 run rule the Royals in 6 innings 12-1, by a outstanding effort by Colonel pitcher Paul Uhl. Paul was in complete control of the game, from the first inning to the last.

 

Paul's numbers for the first game were:

 

6 innings, 73 pitches, 2 walks, 5 strike outs, 5 hits, and only 1 run allowed and it was earned. Paul also picked off a runner on 1st base in the third inning.

 

Hitting for the Colonels in the first game were:

 

Elliott 2-4, triple, 2 runs scored, and 1 rbi

Maile 2-3, 1 walk, double, HR (405), 2 runs scored, 1 sb and 3 rbi's

Maile HR was hit to straight away center field and what a shot it was. At least 405 feet away, maybe a little farther and it was hit high and deep. It brought a lot of wows...... from the fans.. When given the opportunity to hit, the junior to be sure can....

 

It would be worth the price of admission, if they did charge admission, just to see Elliott and Parrot motor around the bases. Both also can cover some real estate on the "D" side of the ball too.

 

Isler had a huge first game by going 3-3 and each hit was solid indeed.

 

Rick Parrott and his Mother left right after the first game to take a college visit to Owensboro, Kentucky, to look over Brescia's University. Good luck Rick, and if you do sign on with the Bearcats, they will have gotten themselves an outstanding second baseman.

In his next three appearance at the plate, the Royals threw Maile a total of 14 pitches of which 12 were balls. The kid can indeed hit and knock in runs....and the other teams know it....

 

Just wondering (really just wondering, really mean nothing by it) but just what were the Royals coaches thinking brining Hurd out for the seventh inning of the second game? In this heat, after the young man had already thrown 107 pitches after 6 innings, and playing in the first game. He had to be one tired young man......

Hurd deserved a much better outcome in this one as the Royals commited several mental and fielding errors and running the bases. Then when Krohman got picked off first called safe (before you argue this with me ask Foster,his words were Brad was hosed at first) and two infield errors helped lead to a four run inning. Maile got intentionally walked because first base was open and there were two out, they were going to walk who ever was up. He was not pitched around at all in the second game. Hurd pitched up and in on one at bat then made a very good pitch on the outside corner that could have been called a strike. I guess the Colonels took ofense to pitching him inside as they hit Hurd on the first pitch in the middle of the back. Hurd was doing what good pitchers do, he wasn't trying to hit him. Royals let this game get away.

1) Won't disagree about Hurd deserving a better fate, but why keep him in the game after 107 pitches in this heat?

 

2) Won't argue with you about the call at first, but the man in Blue said safe, that's all I know from my seat behind the plate.

 

3) About not pitching around Maile, don't tell me that! I was sitting right behind home plate, and the umpire called the same strike zone all game long for both teams. I will agree, that in the second game the home plate umpire had a smaller strike zone than the first game umpire, but you adjust....When you throw 14 pitches and 12 of those are balls, on three different at bats, I don't know what you call it, but I call it pitching around a batter. BTW of the 4 walks that Hurd gave up in the game, three were to Maile and the other one was to Kuebbing in the seventh inning prior to Krohman HR. Funny how his control went south each time Maile got up.....

 

4) Not sure why you would think a pitcher would intentionally hit a batter in the top of the seventh inning, with no outs and only up two runs? If it were me, I wouldn't be doing it, as HBP can come back to bite you in the butt, as this one almost did.

 

It was an exciting game, that I enjoyed quite a bit, and I was glad to see Conner and Kyle playing well. Hopefully the Royals continue to play well during the rest of the season....

Am I the only one to think its excessive to play a DH in July? What's the point? Its not like the Royals had to travel very far. Play them again sometime this week at night.

I do know, that the only day available to the Colonels over the course of the next two weeks is Monday. The Colonels play the Midland Indians on Tuesday at St. Henry (6:30pm), then go on the road to Memphis to play in the Mid-American World Series. From there, they go straight from Memphis to Nashville, to play in the Sandlot World Series, to end the season.
