June 3, 200719 yr As a conservative I have been terribly disappointed in the growth of pork barrel projects over the past 6 years. I had hoped that one good thing (from my point of view) that might come out of the last election was that somehow a change would take place in how Washington operates. I didn't expect it, I just hoped it would.

I used to be a huge line item veto support guy until I read an editorial by George Will (I believe) that made me second think that position. In reading this, keep in mind the state of politics today.... Line Item Veto would actually INCREASE spending. Everyone would be piling even more pork spending on bills and put all the blame on the President if they line item veto. Republican President and you are a democrat, put the $5 million for a regional airport on there to serve your county of 50,000 and when he vetoes it and is up for reelection you bring that up to the voters in your county. So in the nature of today's politics, the line item veto would be neutered and spayed.
June 3, 200719 yr LBBC I agree with that assesment but somebody, somewhere, sometime will have to have the guts to stop this. With a line item veto it only takes one person to have guts not 51% of the house.

Anyone on either side of the 2008 election impress you as the person to have the guts? Me neither.

There should be 3 parties, Republican - Liberals - and the return of the True Democratic Party.

Make it four: Social conservative GOPers and Fiscal conservative GOPers have shown themselves to be just as different as mainstream Dems and hardcore liberals are from one another.

I think we could have four basic parties: Social liberals/Socialists Social liberals/Capitalists Social conservatives/Socialists Social conservatives/Capitalists and maybe a few other special issue parties I would say there are a great number of party members who don't agree with a bit of what their party espouses, they are just in it because that's what they've always been. You'll find pro-life, pro-gun, free trading Democrats in Northern Kentucky, and find pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, trade unionist Republicans in Massachusetts. People cheer for their political party like they cheer for a sports team, it's embarrassing and it stymies progress.
