Early Friday morning, Jones said police were called to another incident that investigators believe Jefferson also was involved in. Jones refused to provide details about that incident, but he said witnesses statements at that scene resulted in the arrests a short time later at 403 16th Street for the Monday break-in.

Maybe DJ was "the people" as well. One robbery is a serious problem, two robberies seems to show that its a pattern. You then have to ask yourself if the police just got lucky and arrested him the ONLY two times he robbed someone. What are the odds?

Do I feel sorry for anyone caught and convicted of a crime? No. So, DJ, if found guilty, is no different in my mind than any other criminal.

 

We should feel sorry for the 400 or so other Holmes seniors who did NOT get arrested and are now moving out into society. They continue to have to deal with idiots who, while small in number, disparage the reputation of all the good kids in Covington (and there are many). I don't buy the line of "making it out of Covington." Its not Compton or East St Louis. We see success stories every day that come out of Covington. Lets salute the Ryan Fischers and quit having people blow smoke up the rear ends of the athletes who dont get it.

Wow unless you know any of the Bulldog seniors pesonally, Jefferson included, I think you need to re think what you're saying. We all know Duran made a dumb mistake and most likely threw away his future, but to say the regional championship game was a life changing game and they NEEDED to win that game in order to have a successful future is an overstatement.

 

And out of the 4 seniors that Holmes had this year, Jefferson is the only one not going to college. All three of the others are, so don't classify all in the same group with Duran. Don't think I'm trying to back him up cuz I certainly am not. I just feel unless you know specifics and have inside sources about him and his family you have no right to pass judgement.

 

We all know Duran needs to grow up and making comments like you knew he'd never amount to anything is flat out disrespectful to not only him but also his parents who actually kept a close eye on him and did all they could to raise him properly, but parents can only do so much and once a kid turns 18 and becomes an adult they no longer have the same power that they once did. He just couldn't handle the freedom and fell in with wrong crowd on the wrong day, plain and simple.

1. I never said that I "never thought that he'd amount to much", I said I never thought that he'd amount to much at 'THE NEXT LEVEL'. This meaning in his 'sports career'. If you want me to add that I never thought that he'd amount to much in life, I will, but it's not what I had originally said. After what he did, the 'never amount to much in life' could certainly be applied. Now he has the job to prove it otherwise.

 

2. You said that I classified the remaining seniors in the same group as Duran. First off I specifically said with the 'exception of Austin Hill', who I think is a class act. Since you know everyone so well, perhaps you can enlighten us all with the remaining seniors' character and storied past and weather you find them capable of life ruining decisions or if you have the utmost faith that they'll stay on the straight and narrow. They are headed to college and I wish them the best. I was also hoping for the best for Duran. I love to see an athelete excel in college after having followed their high school career. I love it when sports becomes a bridge and an opportunity facilitator for kids who may not have many options in life. Many an atheletes' future has been changed or enhanced by being an excellent athelete. Things like scholarships to fantastic educational institutions. Doorways to more doorways. Which brings up my next thought.

 

3. You find it odd that I would place so much emphasis on the 9th Region Championship game as life changing for the Bulldogs. I guess that we can split hairs on this one, but I completely believe that getting to state or not getting to state could make a big difference on various levels. 1st is 'self image' and seeing what can be accomplished with lots of hard work. They dedicated their entire lives to getting to the Sweet 16. They made it through lots of hard work and got to see first hand what came to fruition because of it. Players who lose after putting so much of themselves into the game stand a chance to either learning from the loss or taking a serious dip in their self image. The Bulldogs made it to the Semi-finals which is nothing to be ashamed of. Things may have played out differently in their self-images if they hadn't made it to Rupp after having been touted as the the team to beat in the 9th for the last 3 years. Secondly, just getting to Rupp opens up other doorways (just ask Troy McKinley or Dickie Beal or Antwain Barbour etc....) that may not have opened up for atheletes if they had not gotten there. I say that performing at the high level that they did in the Sweet 16 only enhanced the possibilities of their futures. Even if the Bulldogs don't get back next year, I think that Henderson's performance has increased the amount of eyeballs that are on him now that can only make his future look a little more bright. They lose in the 9th Region Final and their future doorways are not as varied. Granted, they were headed to the next level, Rupp or not, the experience certainly didn't hurt or hinder their future outlook or possibilities. I really think that with the Bulldogs, the 9th Region Final opened up future possibilities and if they had lost I think that could've opened up future possiblities that were not as nice.

 

You are correct. I don't personally know anyone here that we are talking about. I'm just an observer of the game. This forum isn't exactly intended only for those who personally know eveyone that they comment about. I don't personally know Jessica Simpson either but just being on this earth and seeing her on TV about a million times, I tend to form opinions about things. Everyone's entitled to my opinion but they are certainly entitled to disagree too. I do tend to question my own responsibility towards comments that I make considering I am referring to real people and this is a local matter. You apparrently know these people, so that leaves us to see your take as a fair assessment of things or a partial one. I think that it's a little of both. I'm not out to crush any toes. I guess I'm kind of watching the whole thing like a reality TV show and you might be closer to the matter, that it really is reality to you. If you are close to anyone that you think that I've dissed, I never intended to upset anyone. In a nutshell I'm just terribly disappointed that any of this has happened and I wish that things could be different. But they're not, and it is really disheartening that the storm clouds that seem to hang over Covington Holmes never seem to go away. I guess that this can open up a larger disection of society and life in the inner city, but that's a whole other chapter in itself.

 

As I blab on about all of this, as if any of it is any of my business anyway, I can't help but wonder why in the heck a past assistant coach has a former student over at his house showing him his gun collection. I guess this part is perfectly legal, but seems to me to be kind of irresponsible on the part of the coach. Hindsight is 20/20 but it just seems a little strange to me. I can see why he is ticked and wants to press charges, but what was he thinking in the 1st place? Again, I'm not close to the matter, so there's alot here (like everything) that I have no business commenting on.

Thanks for the previous post before this one. It really cleared up a lot and showed where you truly stand so I apologize. But you want my assessment on the other seniors and the situation, well here it is:

 

Duran has pretty much been kept under someone's wing his whole life and had someone there to tell him "No Duran you can't do this or that" which is why you never heard of him getting in trouble off the court before this. His parents have always been very strict on him especially his mother. In school though he'd get away with little things simply because he was "Duran Jefferson-star athlete." I personally know both his mother and father and know they wouldn't stand for Duran ever doing something to this degree. teachers knew to call his mother if he was doing something truly irresponsible that would affect him in harsh ways.

 

Now, why Coach Marshall was showing Duran his gun collection? I don't think that was the case. Marshall was very involved with the basketball program both on and off the court especially with Lexie Brown and Ryan Mitchell. He took Mitchell in and treated him as if it were his own son which is why Mitchell has actually excelled in life so far. Duran knew Marshall had a gun collection in his house simply because he had been over there a few times with other teammates, such as Mitchell and Lexie. Why Duran would break in to his gun collection? I honestly have no idea. His cousin, who will be convicted with him has always been in trouble and I think with Duran turning 18 and not being able to handle the freedom he finally had away from his parents, it all caught up to him.

 

Duran just really isn't that mature. Since he's been babied (sp?) his whole life, this just goes to show he couldn't handle being a young 18 yr old adult and handle the freedom that comes with it. Do I think Duran is a good kid though? Absolutely. He has taken A.P and I'B courses which some of you don;t know since his sophomore year and is actually very smart, but the crowd he was hanging around (his cousin, whom he just started hanging around every day a couple months ago), finally nipped him in the bud and caught up to him. But as far as this being a life lesson for him, I totally agree and think this will make him a better person. Duran has never had to face a punishment like this and I can guarantee you his family, and their disappointment will open his eyes and make him realize what a dumb mistake he's made.

 

 

As far as the other seniors, Austin will probably be the most successful but simply because his mother and aunt Celeste keep him on a short leash as well as the rest of his family. Kejuan Arnold, another senior basketball player will also be attending college, is a honor student and has never been in any trouble throughout his high school career. Now on to the big one, Greg Rice. Rice faced some troubles his junior year as we all know, but if this past year hasn't showed you that he truly is on the right track then I don't know what he has to do to prove it. Rice is also going to college on a scholarship for basketball and just from talking to him and seeing the way he carries himself both on and off the court, you can tell he really has changed. He led by example this past year as did Austin.

Great Post!! It's the few bad seeds that give Holmes their bad rep. What some don't realize is Holmes has some of the best academics in the state (only school with the I.B program), has the best vocational program in the state, and one of the best MJROTC programs in the state as well.

 

Holmes is actually thinking about going from an 8-12 school to a 10-12. The administrators and board of education think one of the main reasons for Holmes having many students with bad character is because the younger kids come in to high school as 8th graders and just aren't mature enough yet to handle a school of that size.

In my haste last night, I failed to mention Brandent Englemon as a shining example of the type of kid Holmes puts out. In addition, there are hundreds of kids that aren't in the spotlight that simply go on to live a productive life. Hats off to the educators at Holmes and to the Covington community who make an effort to show these kids love and support.

1) Bad circumstances don't equal bad decisions. By all accounts, this kid's family is a good one. He obviously rebelled. Don't blame his parents, blame him.

 

2) Comparing this situation to the Willie Williams situation would work, if we were comparing them either historically, or in the future. Right now, they're apples to oranges until we find out how Duran handles his future.

 

3) I hope he handles his future the way Willie Williams, and others that UL has taken a chance on recently have. Get this taken care of, get back on track, and work to regain your dream.

 

4) As a 19 year old, he deserves to be treated harshly. Maybe not by us, but by those closest to him. Most of us are observers only. I'm sure his family is in a lot of conflict right now. They want to defend him, he's their little boy. But it sounds like his mother is capable of being the "tough-love" kind of mother, and although not knowing her, I'm betting she won't let him think she thinks he's been victimized somehow.

 

5) This has nothing at all to do with UK, Rich Brooks, or their recruiting efforts. A school/team recruits the best athletes possible for their program. The baggage the recruits carry is their own responsibility, not the programs'. I'm sure Coach Brooks will make the right decision.
