36th District Final:

Wildcats pull off the upset led by 8th grade pitcher Shawn Klaas. Sophomore Willie Price singled in Hesch for the game winning run in the bottom of the 8th. Great game by both teams and good luck in regionals. The all tournament team consisted of Tony Mayes of Bellevue, Dale Ferrel of Dayton, Jared Harris of NewCath, Allen and Rawlings of Highlands, and Pat Klaas, JJ Hesch, and the MVP was Shawn Klaas.

WOW, oh WOW, oh WOW talk about an upset.... Congrats to Newport...WOW..... Has to be the biggest upset of the year in the entire Commonwealth.....

DD can you believe this?

This is so shocking to me and congrats to Newport. Highlands-CovCath or Highlands-Ryle could now be a first round matchup on Monday. WOWSER!

Newport out hit Highlands tonight 10 hits to 5 hits. Highlands only having hits by Ader, Shields, Muench, O'Brien and Rawlings. Rawlings hit his 3 HR in 3 consecutive games. Rawlings had 4 RBI'S tonight. Towles pitched the first 4 innings for Highlands and didn't have a great outing. Rawlings pitched the last 4 innings. The Birds had 7 errors tonight and I believe Newport had 6 errors. Not a great defensive game for either team. Newports pitcher, Shawn Klass, threw a great game.

The bottom of the 8th played out like this - Hesch got on with an error, Tolson sac bunted him to 2nd, Piccirillo struck out, Shoopman was intentionally walked, and W. Price hit a single up the middle to score the winning run.

I have Billy Wolfinbarger making the all tournament team, not JJ Hesch.

13 errors combined? Yikes.

I'am pretty much speachless....if you can believe that. Not to take anything away from Newport....they just proved to us all once again, "on any given day."

What an upset. I watched both of these teams multiple times this season, and Highlands is a much better baseball team, but on any given day anything can happen I guess.

This kinda reminds me of back in the district tournament in either 1999 or 2000 where Highlands and Newport met in the first round of the district tourney. Highlands had guys like Dickie Boothe and such and were very good maybe only a couple losses that year and Newport had only won a few games all year they werent very good. Newport puts a frosh on the mound and upsets the birds and ends their season. I remember that being a huge upset sorta like this one.

I agree, unless they were playing with mittens on both hands this is scary, especially at this time of the year.

Congratulations to Coach Grady Brown and his players. What an accomplishment!

Well, looks like HHS gets to play either CCH, Ryle, or Dixie. They just got the lucky draw.

I agree, who wants to pitch their ace in the first round game of the regional against Highlands. You almost have to now being one and done:D
