Coach Rick Mays definietly deserves to be considered in this conversation. Coach Mays has 350 kids in his entire high school to pick his team from, where most other schools have that in each graduating class. He doesnt have the luxury of athletes as the Russell's, and Ashland's, and Greenup's. He has over 350 wins, 5 Class "A" regional titles, 3 district titles, a regional runner-up, and a regional championship in 26 years at a Class "A" school. I don't know that you can come up with 10 Class "A" coaches in the state that have that resume. You say that Sandy Hook has had numerous teams comes through, but if you think about it I bet you couldn't come up with 5 teams that was the favorite to win the district. 3 of those 5 years, he has won them. Like you said, he has a talented group now and you see what he is doing with it. He has been to the last two regional championships and he won last year.

You make some very good, points about Rick Mays,. He is an excellent coach. :thumb: I also love the small class A schools.

If the people of the 16th would look at their rosters whether it be Russell, Raceland, Fairview or Elliot etc, we take in transfers . We don't ask if they are athletes before we accept them. As far as if a coach has to have them from 4th grade on is irrelevant its what he does with them when he has them

No matter how many students in a school the coach can only play 5 at a time.

up until the last 2 years the 1st thing any player did when they saw Elliott was consider who's next ----like it or not they have been a doormat ---until the last 2 years ---when they have been very good. To claim transfers is even small % of the success of the 63rd district is absurd. I don't recall any transfer at all helping Greenup win 4 titles. The 62's total of 2 sweet 16's tells the story. I'd bet a buck that even the # of trips to the finals of the region would show the 63rd has been there many more times than the 62nd . The 62 is waaaay weaker than the 63rd. But don't hang your head ---EC is going to win plenty the next few years. LB

All you posters before are naming the ones that have talent year in and year out. Put Humphrey, O'Hern, and others with the Augustas, Demings, Brackens, and Silver Groves and then you will see their true coaching skills. I believe anyone could coach Mason and Clark to the region every year.

They can coach, thats why they are at where they are at, no so-called power would put up with their coach not being very good and successful. Try it the other way around and put those coaches at Mason and Clark, etc. and see they handle the pressure of having to win every year not just make a region every 5 or 6 years.

I am going to disagree with this comment. While it is easier to win at larger schools, a lot of coaches began their careers at very small schools and were very successful before accepting positions at larger schools. There are tons of very large schools that seldom ever reach the Sweet 16. I especially like the job Humphrey has done at Clark Co. I don't think ANYONE could have done the job he has done. I also think you put the states best coaches at Deming, Bracken Co, etc. and they would be winners. They may not go to the Sweet 16 but they would build a very successful program. I have seen it done at Evarts (Hicks), Harlan (Jones, and Hicks), JBS (Stepp), Corbin (Hicks and Deaton) and many others.

He would turn them into a winner. They wouldnt be able to beat Madison Central very much if any, but they would be the 2nd best team in the district in a couple years and have a winning record. Hicks won at Evarts. No one else has won much at all in Evarts.

Yeah right only if he could get players in there. Berea won 1 game last year give Hicks the same team he wouldve won 3 and if he was there they wouldnt beat Central or Madison Southern. Coaches get too much credit sometimes and not enough other times, its all about who is wearing the jerseys. I say atleast half of the coaches in the state couldve won the state with the team he had last year.

Evarts had won about 2 or 3 the year before he took over. They won 10, 14 & 20 the folllowing 3 years. Harlan had won 2 or 3 the year before. They won 14, 24, and 26 the nex three years. I think Corbin only won 3 or 4 the year before. They won 14 the first year and about 25-30 per year the next 7 years. I think he would have won more about 10 his first year, about 1/2 of them his second, and about 20 his 3rd.

I would also throw in Coach Wright from Lee Co. in the 14th for what he has accomplished over the past couple year. Bringing Lee from a walk over team to a possible favorite in tournament play eventhough they did get upset last year in district:D .

15th Region

1-Bill Mike Runyon-Paintsville

2-Jason Booher-Shelby Valley

3-Johnny Martin-Allen Central

4-Bart Williams-Pikeville

5-Mark Starnes-Johnson Central

Coach Dodd is an NAIA Hall of Fame coach.

 

He won the region last year with the first class of seniors he had coached for 4 years. He, without question had the best team in the region "with Vanhoose" this year.

 

As far as the most basketball talent, who, besides Vanhoose was a top 10 player in the region this year for Russell?

 

Two starters from last year(Kasey Clark & Jacob Sizemore) chose not to play their senior season.

 

The next two years will be rebuilding years for the Devils.

 

Please, just ask the other coaches who they think is tops in the 16th.:fire: ...

They will be lucky to break 500 this year......:sleep:
