I say take all healthy adults between 18-35 who are not working for whatever reason and collecting some sore of welfare be it money, food, stamps or a medical card and make them enlist in the service. They will be in for eight years this way we will have a nice steady stream on new solders going into the service or a bunch of lazy people being forced to get off of their lazy butts and find a job as a civilian.

If they can’t be productive members of society as a civilian what makes you think they could do any better in the military? Serving in the military should be looked at as an honor and privilege and should be reserved for those that want to be there… My idea would be to make them earn their benefits, such as working for the city, county and state they reside in. The time they would have to put in would depend on the worth of their benefits, if they don’t report to work you simply cut their benefits. That may be a bad idea with several holes, but I think it’s a lot better than sending them to the military so they can become a cancer on a whole new level…
May 6, 200719 yr Simple solution to the Welfare problem would be "Have them Drug tested to recieve benefits". If they test postive they lose their benefits.

The drug testing model is another highly judgmental suggestion. The vast majority of Kentucky's welfare rolls are filled with folks below the poverty line and receiving food stamps and WIC because of fathers who have abandoned them and poor education, not because of drugs. Rather than throwing out the baby with the bath water, I suggest we work on poverty by actually improving our public schools and raising up the level of our workforce. Hey, there's a novel concept.

What are you suggesting we do to improve our public schools? Do you really think the schools are the problem?

I agree to a point, welfare has become generational. Too many people have learned to live off of the system and to be quite content in doing so. I think we should bring back orphanages like we had in the past. Children should be taken form parents who have no intent of seeing to it they are raised with proper schooling and a descent family environment. I’m not saying all single mother families here, just the ones that could really care less about how they raise their kids and in what atmosphere.

Sorry but I don't think having someone that solely depends on the government to survive to do a little community service/work is that bad of an idea or an injustice to them, if anything it may inspire them... I think its a little sad when I see the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts or some church group cleaning up our roadways or painting over some graffiti, when those jobs could be done by able bodied people that do nothing but draw a check…

The second option would be foster care until/if they can be adopted out to a family who works and can provide for them.

As a parent, I think that is an awful thing to say. The problem is not so much the welfare recipients as it is the welfare system. While it's true that there are some who take advantage of the system, far more are trapped by it.
