Not saying he sucked in college, becuase he balled out, but Jordan was A LOT better in the NBA. His name makes him out to be a lot better of a college player than he was.

That was as a freshman, but even then, he took the big shot to win the game over Georgetown. Jordan might not start on this college list, but he has to be no lower than sixth man.

Yes, he won the Wooden Award in '84.

 

That season he played alongside Perkins, et al. and lost in the tourny.

Wasn't sure if Hayes played forward or center, same with Ralph Sampson as it came down to those two for power forward.

This is almost a futile thread, because any time this topic comes up--greatest college basketball players--people chime in with the name Michael Jordan. While MJ is without a doubt the greatest basketball player ever, he is not even one of the top 25 college basketball players of all time. But people cannot separate his NBA greatness from his college career, which is why he's always on these lists.

 

Because I didn't see a lot of these guys play, I don't know what position to put them in. But I would have to put Bill Walton on there. I've heard a lot of people state that they believe he's the greatest college player ever.

 

Oscar Robertson would have to be there as well. Am I right in saying that the man averaged a triple-double at UC? Averaged a triple-double? Are you kidding me? I don't care if you're playing the St. Whatever pre-school team...if you average a triple-double, that's special.

 

Will also put Pistol Pete here. I believe he, not Michael Jordan, transformed the college game the most. Not to mention he is the all-time leading scorer in Division 1 history.

 

I would also think Lew Alcindor would be on the list. While he played the same position as Walton, his numbers are too good to leave him off.

 

And as badly as I hate to say it, it's extremely difficult to keep Christan Laettner away. There may have been better individual players, but that guy hit big shot after big shot, and all he ever did was win. I hate his guts, but he was one heck of a college player.

 

The coach is easy--John Wooden. His records will never come close to being matched on the college level.

I agree with most of you on MJ, greatest NBA player of all time maybe. Just another great college player but by no means was he a top 10-20 all time college player.

1. I find it easy not to include Laettner, yes, he was a very good college player and no, it is not bc I am a UK fan. I honestly do not believe that he would even be in the top 25 - 30 all time.

 

2. I agree with Wooden, hard to argue that. I included Rupp bc I think that he also deserves mention with the all time coaches and this team.

Laettner played Center in college.

I was young when Jordan was in college, but for those watching him, did you honestly say to yourself at that time, "Man, this is the best shooting guard ever at the collegiate level."
