April 27, 200719 yr The ban begins August 1st but has the option to be revised in 2008. "The NCAA's board of directors approved a ban Thursday to eliminate all text messages from coaches to recruits beginning in August, then left open the possibility of revisiting that legislation as early as 2008. "One of the abuses that was described to us were text messages from a coach to a player saying, 'Call me,'" Division I vice president David Berst said on a conference call. As a result, coaches will no longer be allowed to send text messages to recruits." "The board was swayed very much by what the student-athletes had to say," Berst said. "We heard anecdotal stories of someone waking up and having 52 text messages." Per ESPN
April 27, 200719 yr I believe the reason they left the door open in 2008 to revisit this legislation is because they do not want to totally ban text messaging, but limit it. I believe they want to regulate text messages, but do not have any idea at this time on how to do it and what the limit might be-- Look for this to be revised in 2008.
April 27, 200719 yr Yeah good luck enforceing that one, all they have to do is buy a cell phone that's not billed to the university.
April 27, 200719 yr I hope BCG has the "busiest thumbs in America" from here until July 31 @ 11:59 PM.

April 27, 200719 yr Duke didn't do much texting. It seems like the NCAA is out to get us. As soon as we have a coach that is willing to recruit using text messaging, we're slapped back down. In all seriousness, I think Gillispie can still recruit the heck out of the players. It might be best for the families to have it banned. I know Patterson's mom paid a $507 cell phone bill.

Thats why you get unlimited text....
April 27, 200719 yr Exactly what I was thinking. How are you going to enforce something like that? I suppose all it would take to be implemented for breaking the rule is a kid or parent reporting that a coach sent them a text. If they really wanted to get the person in trouble all they would have to do is not delete the message, or save cell phone bills. I'd say that a lot of high schoolers, and especially their parents, are kind of relieved about this rule. It's so easy to text that it could get very annoying. I've heard of some prep ballers receiving up to 200 texts per week.
April 27, 200719 yr I dont think they should ban it, but however if a school is going to choose to use text as one of the ways to recruit the kid. Then the NCAA actually should make the school give the kid a cheap sell phone with only text on it, so this way if a school wants to text their players its not going to cost the players or parents money because the school would be the one paying for the text. I know that probably wouldn't be allowed though...
April 27, 200719 yr So then recruits would have 10, 15, 20 cell phones? How about this for a novel idea. Why don't the coaches leave them alone for a while and only contact them when the rules say thay can instead of trying to find loopholes in the rules?
