Then I got to grow more mature and saw the truth and reality of the world and realized those college professors had no clue. Same way with the education programs. No way they prepare you to teach.
May 1, 200719 yr The older I get, the more liberal I become in my politics and the more conservative I become in my personal habits. Being a liberal requires me to respect the choices others make and know that I don't have all the answers.

Is being conservative equivalent to not "having a heart?" My view on abortion is DRIVEN by my heart breaking because of killing little babies. I would counter that the intellectual arguments of liberals, like on the abortion issue, is not having heart. It is more important to them that a person have freedom to their own body even thought THEIR own choices has put them into that position than the life of the baby. I would counter that the heart position on that debate is clearly with the conservatives.

I've had a few college professors that seemed generally liberal, and others that were probably conservative but for the most part, politics are pretty much left out. How come colleges are considered the breeding grounds for liberals? I mean, I don't see people giving speeches about free will, or right to abortion. I've only seen Bible-beaters and people putting up posters of aborted fetuses. If anything, I'd say UofL is a pretty strong right-wing stomping ground.

I know I am taking an over-simplified approach to what Churchill said, but was he basically saying "Conservatives care about theirselves and darn the rest" If so - does this mesh with what some of you think is the fundamental difference between the parties? Dems think government should take care of everyone / Rep's think everyone should take care of themselves - regardless of outcome?

The conservatives I know do alot volunteering and financially supporting programs through their churches and not through their churces BUT NOT government programs that are aimed at helping those less fortunate. American Idol had a program where they were showing HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of people that are volunteering their time at food banks in LA. In my part of the world, those people would be called conservatives. I go back to my definition where liberals/Democrats look at government to solve the problems and call conservatives heartless when they don't want government to solve the issues but expect individuals through their own actions including volunteering and supporting programs through their churches and not through their churches that are aimed at solving those problems. I am more wary of a how efficient and effective a government program is run compared to a program run through a church or some not-for-profit organization.

Probably both. When one support programs that are paid for by someone other than him/her, he/she tends to be idealistic. However, when the greenbacks are coming from that person's wallet, the idealism is replaced by realism. In other words, charity begins at home, so to speak. The brain takes over sometime between 20 and 40.
