This is exactly the sort of condescending tone that I was referring to.

 

Not only does it assume that I am 'fledgling' (definition: "newcomer; any new participant in some activity") WHICH I AM NOT, it dismisses my views based entirely on assumptions relating to my age. This is the very reason that I didn't list my age when I joined BGP, because of biased opinions such as yours.

 

How convienient for me that I have learned from real world experiences. By the age of 8, I was more politically involved than the vast majority of adults in America. In 1991, I watched every debate, I watched the interviews on the Sunday Morning talk circuit, I attended rallies, I wrote candidates. I knew the candidates and their positions.

 

I have worked campaigns, been part of social intervention initiatives, worked through my church and school and Boy Scouts and other outlets ad infinitum to help people and learn about our society. I've listened in one-on-one conversations to people tell their stories of surviving the Holocaust, marching for Civil Rights, and fleeing war and distruction in Africa. I've been the primary caretaker for 2 people close to me that have died.

 

But to you, I'm just a child that has to 'grow up' before my brain can 'take over' and form the correct opinions (those that match yours, of course.)

We're back to the 'Led Astray by Ivory Tower Liberals' theory, when I've already explained that:

 

1) Most of my political science professors have been conservatives.

 

2) I had already begun to form my political identity decades before I set foot on a college campus.

 

 

 

There's nothing you can say that's going to show that I'm just a foolish little child too new to the world to understand it. Because it's not true. You've made this untrue assumption based solely and completely upon my age. It's stereotyping, and it's insulting.

 

I do not wish to dismiss your level of "involvement". However, I must conclude that it is all second hand and heresay. In other words, all you know is what others have told you or that you have heard somewhere. I have been watching as the Reds beat the Astros 11-2. I have listened to eveything said by the announcers and have observed each and every play- pitch by pitch. However, that, in and of itself, does not make me an informed individual as to the real process and workings of baseball. As some may put it, you are talking the talk but you have never walked the walk.

 

I would also submit that, if you are being honest about all these conservative political science teachers you have been subjected to, you have obviously attended Liberty University or some similar institution. You don't find more than a token conservative in the political science departments of 99% of our colleges and universities. For you to imply otherwise is less than informed.

Has it ever occured to you that maybe the guy taking the professors has a better beed on their left-right leans than the guy just making assumptions?:lol:

 

The political science department at U of L is dominated by the MCCONNELL CENTER. As in Mitch McConnell, R KY, Minority Leader of the Senate. Maybe you've heard of him. Sounds like a real liberal institution, huh? :lol:

 

My involvement is NOT just second hand. I think I made that clear. Although there were some 'passive' examples they weren't the only things I mentioned. I've worked in the community to help people, I've worked for campaigns, I've worked in hospitals, been part of a business (I've sold tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise in my family's auction company) and done a million other things that I don't really need to list. I have, in short, been out in the real world.

I mean, seriously, the most powerful professor in the department is Gregg (I've already pointed out his conservative credentials,) and I've had him several times. Another professor I've had is somewhere between a realpolitiker and a neocon, depending on if you're discussing China or not.

 

I think I've had 8 different professors in the department and they're at worst evenly split (3 left, 3 right and 2 which either are so ambiguous or so good at hiding behind playing Devil's Advocate that no one knows WHAT they are.) And I've taken more classes with the conservatives.

Anyway, this thread is so off topic (and it's mostly my fault) so I'm going to apologize and exit stage left (haha) before I get banned.
