2007 Whitley County

Featured Replies

The Colonels will be better and in a much weaker district. They will be competitive this year.

Sure it is a weaker district. That's what happens when you play with schools that are your own size. But it won't be a weak district. Clay is very good. North Laurel, with the exception of last year, has been good recently. I think Letcher will be good as well. It will be a very competitive district.

You say weaker like it is a bad thing, heck the only thing that could make it better is if they were only in a four team district.

Seriously, it is not the district that the Colonels had to play in back in the 90's when they had Bell County and Rockcastle County and even Cawood when they were good. It is not the district of Madison Central, GRC, Norht and South Laurel, so yes it is a better district for Whitley to compete in and in all reality Whitley should be a lock for the playoffs every year. That by its self will make them better. You get more practice each year, Say they get to the second round this year, thats two weeks more practice, and next year they get to the third round, that three weeks more practice and the next year the fourth round.....by the time this years freshmen are seniors they will have had almost a whole seasons worth of extra practice which will make them that much better for their senior year. So being in a "weak" district is not a bad thing.

Nothing wrong with being in a weak district (I don't think Whitley had a choice in the matter), that can allow you to play tougher out of district games like Corbin has for years...I don't think Nomorenoles meant it as a negative...

And Whitley is using that to the advantage, playing Bell County, Newport, Middlesobro, Rockcastle County and Lynn Camp out of district, now that is a very challenging schedule.

That is a very good out of district schedule, Jim Black has never been one to shy away from playing good teams that will get his team ready for the playoffs...

Harlan County may be on the way in 2008.

Harlan County may be on the way in 2008.

When will it be determined if Harlan Co. will a field a team in 08?

Also you can add Woodford Co. to Whitleys schedule which does make it a pretty good non-district schedule.

Barring problems, it's already been determined.

The only bad thing about Harlan County coming in is the trip up 119, other than that I think it is a great addition to the district....of course it makes it a 6 team district which limits what you can do outside the district.

Very good may be an understatement. Coach Black's scheduling will definately prepare his team well for the District and playoffs. Of his six non district games, only Lynn Camp (a traditionally strong Single A school) failed to make the playoffs last year. In fact, all the five others won at least one playoff game last year. I think it's the most demanding non district schedule in East Kentucky.

Bell County last year 9-3 lost in 2nd round of Playoffs

Newport last year 8-4 lost in 2nd round of playoffs

Middlesboro last year 11-2 lost in regional finals

Rockcastle last year 11-2 los in regional finals

Woodford County last year 8-4 lost in 2nd round of playoffs

Combined record for those five teams: 47-15, playoff record 7-5

Pretty impressive stuff!

Whitley's district was very tough last year. Their opportunity to advance is a lot better this year. I expect and hope that they have a great season. Their young athletes will turn some heads this year.

After a week + of practice, how are the Colonels looking?

Are any of these schools 5A schools? Pick on some one your own size and then talk about how tough your schedule is.

I think Bell Co, Rockcastle Co, and Middlesboro are worthy additions to ANY team in Eastern Ky's schedule. It doesn't matter if they are 5A or not. Newport and Lynn Camp are competative programs too. That is a very good out of district schedule for a team that is trying to build up its program.
