$4.00 last night for a JV game that was called after 2 hours because the varsity game starts at 7:00. It was called at 6:30 with the home team batting and trailing by the head varsity coach.

At St Xavier, JV and Freshmen games are free, Varsity games are $3.00

Maybe they will start honoring KY State High School Coaches Passes at football games?

 

Not many NKY schools charge at a baseball game, regular season anyway.

If it's a regular season game, they do. I GUARANTEE you that. If it's not a regular season game, no one honors coaches passes...

I can understand the cost factor. Most crews of umpires cost for a set of two around 150.00 a game but baseball in most places is not a revenue generator and I would think that schools are entitled to off-set the cost but 5 dollars is way too much.

So, on top of the practices (2 - 2.5 hours per day during the season) plus the weight training that serious athletes do in the off season, plus the 1 - 2 hours of homework per night, plus the field work that the players do for upkeep of their facility (raking, dragging, mowing) they also need to "work" so that they can have officials at their games and nice uniforms etc. All this so that YOU (the general YOU and not a specific you) won't have to fork over the cost of a value meal or a matinee movie to watch them play.

 

I guess that is fair.

By "you" I meant anyone who just wants to walk up and watch baseball. As for "paying" to play, that depends on which team you are talking about. It is possible to play for some of them inexpensively (and by that I mean virtually for nothing) if you are willing to sell ads, work bingo, etc.

 

It is still not free - you either work to play or you pay to play - just doesn't seem fair.

 

What about those kids who have little financial means and a non-interested parent. I guess they have to take their ball and go home.

As Sticky pointed out, Highlands does honor Ky coaching passes at reg. season football games. They do not, and are not supposed to, honor the passes at playoff games.

 

And I agree with folks that admission should be charged for baseball games. Frankly, I think every sport should charge admission, where practical. There are some venues that charging admission is just not practical.

 

Final point, someone mentioned that at their school the football team is provided with cleats by the school. At Highlands, the football players provide their own cleats for what its worth.

I'll admit that $5 is very steep for a baseball game, but so is $185 for umpires ( if you play varsity and jv )and $1 per mile when a team has to take a bus to a road game. I won't even get started on gas. Baseball and softball teams at small schools are really being hit hard right now and it is no surprise that admission charges are starting to reflect that in some places.

 

FWIW I think 5.00 was becasue it is a district game.

 

That's interesting because the game between Frankfort and Franklin County was $3.
