SouthernSportsFan Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 People keep saying, "give us four or five years before we're talking about a Final Four," or "the next couple of seasons will be down seasons, then we'll be back on track." What makes you think this? I could understand if after several years Gillispie had the history of making a national powerhouse, but that's not the case. He has turned poor basketball schools into contenders in 1-2 years. At UTEP, in his second season, his win total quadrupled that of his first season. At Texas A&M, he tripled the win total in his first season of that from the year before. I know the SEC is much harder than those two conferences, and our non-conference schedule is brutal, but why are people having a hard time believing that we'll make the tourney or have a low seed if we make it? This is a bold statement, but at this moment, without anymore recruits, I think Kentucky will win the SEC with a 12-4 record - that's my honest opinion. I honestly think that Kentucky will have a 26-28 win season, and less than 10 losses. Bash me if you want, but I realistically think this will happen under Gillispie. Thoughts?
mobaar Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I think UK will win 20+ games next season. Beyond that, anything can happen. It really depends on how Billy manages to fill the remaining scholarships.
Wireman Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I think UK will go 32-4 next season and advance to the Final Four.

spe690 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Honestly, I believe that they are a big man away from being a pretty good team. Having Carter in the middle is just too much of a liability. UT is going to be hard to touch next year in the SEC though.

Not with their current stable of big men...they need help in that department immediately if they want to achieve the success that you have stated for them.

I was thinking the same thing about Tennessee, but Gillispie's A&M beat Texas and Kansas, which is impressive. I think his defense can shut down Tennessee, but we'll just have to wait and see.

5wide Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I don't think UK will be any worse next season than they have been the last two...whether they will be better, and how much better, I don't know. My personal opinion is that UK will exceed expectations next year. To what extent, it's hard to say. I've just never bought into the thinking that we'll be lucky to play .500 next year and the loss of Randolph Morris has doomed us. If Billy G makes some waves in recruiting the next couple of months, then the outlook, expectations and potential for next year could change dramatically...so it would probably be wise to wait until we have our roster set for next year before we make too many guesses about the upcoming season.

HOMELESS CAMEL Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I have told anyone that will listen that if the new coach starts the season 21-0, it won't matter if he doesn't get to the final four. Tubby would still be here if he got wins in the tournament. He struggled recently and that was one of the reasons that led to his demise. November to February games count, but it's the ones in the NCAA tournament that will determine how long it might be before UK is looking for another coach.
Brewsky Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Tennessee will be the cream of the crop next season in the SEC.
