April 2, 200719 yr It is getting into the absurd area, money wise. However, some info is leaking out that the money is now approaching the 4 million category. Remember when I threw out there that UK may be bidding against NBA teams and Florida, Jeremy Foley said that the Donovan raise would come from basketball monies UF has generated. UF doesn't make that great of money basketball wise. Billy D will not go to a bad NBA team ala the Grizzlies. Shaq-Daddy-Diesel-Fu-Schnickens has come out and said he wants no part of a college coach for the Heat.
April 2, 200719 yr If someone is going to pay it, then yes he is worth it...Don't give the economics course answer. No COLLEGE coach is worth that kind of money. When I told Ms. 02 the kind of money that's been bandied about for Donovan, she was scandalized. I think if Donovan lands that kind of college pay day, there is going to be increased scrutiny on universities' athletic devotion compared to their educational mission.

April 2, 200719 yr It sounds as if Mitch Barnhart is willing to sell his soul to the devil to get Billy. A salary like that is embarrassing for the university IMO.....
April 2, 200719 yr Somehow, I doubt that. There's a lot of talk about it now. And those kind of numbers would break into mainstream media. Donovan's contract would be a 60 Minutes segment and a half.

April 2, 200719 yr If Donovan is paid that much, we will see the ripple effects throughout the NCAAs. I read somewhere that Quinnipiac's coach is paid in the neighborhood of $300k a year. Quinnipiac! Plus, it's not really that much considering each UK home game brings the university in around a cool half-mil.

Considering the economic benefits that the basketball program brings to the university, I'd guess that the impact of the increase in salary vs. the former HC salary, the increase would soon be offset. The cashcow that UK basketball would return to in the immediate future at least would offset that cost IMO. Not to mention that he wouldn't exactly be a couple of million per ahead of the highest paid coaches in the country. He just won a national title, and may have his second tonight, you're not exactly paying for an "up and comer" but a proven commodity. Economically speaking, I doubt that his contract would draw as much attention as you may think, just my opinion.

UK basketball pays the bills for the rest of the athletic department. But look at the flip side. A rising tide lifts all boats, and the market price of ALL coaches will rise when one of them is paid north of 4 Million a year. And the vast majority of athletic departments are running in the red. The NCAA President thinks it's a concern, and he obviously is pretty focused on athletics. How do you think all those English Lit professors feel about it?
April 2, 200719 yr I wonder if we will know something by tomorrow? It does seem a litle far-fetched that they would give him that kind of money. What type of Plan B do they have if Donavon turns them down?

April 2, 200719 yr If Billy does get that kind of money, I can tell you there will be a lot of people upset about it in the UK community. Even though the two may not be related, tuition prices are rising by 10-12% a year and a lot of people involved with the university could care less about basketball. It's just ridiculous that a basketball coach at UK could make 40 to 50 times the money that a tenured professor makes. UK's mission to be a top 20 university by 2020 doesn't have anything to do with the AP or Coaches poll........

That's an old story, you think pro athletes should get paid more than a surgen, someone who saves lives? No, they shouldn't, but they do..It's society now and it's not going to stop. If a university could get a coach from the NBA they'd probably pay him some good money. Yes it may be wrong but it's not going to stop people from going to UK.
