June 6, 200719 yr I am trying to think of a positve explanation for the course the Reds are on. Perhaps the cliche : sometimes you need to take a step backwards to take two forward, can apply here. They are definetly in the step back mode at this time. Time will tell if there are any forward steps to be taken. I guess the big question is how long considering the patience of a lot of fans including myself is thin at best.
June 6, 200719 yr I don't mind replacing Narron at all. But if you do it now, we are right back in the ugly merry-go-round. My point on finding a new way every night is that they are good enough to be in every game right down to the last pitch. You've never been in that situation as a coach? If so, was it your fault? Are they awful? No. Do changes need to be made? Sure. But who and what do you change when everyone has had a turn to see a mistake cost them a game??? OK, fair enough (though I think it's a bit of an overstatement) - but they are also bad enough to be losing all of these games. Bottom-line is that "close" doesn't count in this sport. It's about wins and they certainly aren't building on last year's .500 club. Yes, sadly, as a coach I have been responsible for a few of my teams' losses. Coach enough games and you'll make some mistakes (some pretty stupid). It actually bothers me more when we do lose a close game. I go back and analyze my every move - was there something I did or didn't do that could have been the cause of the 1-run loss? Sometimes the answer is not all that flattering. I don't think there's any doubt that some of Narron's moves have cost the Reds some games. And he's just not entitled to make as many mistakes as is an amateur coach such as myself. Narron constantly gives me the impression that he is overwhelmed and confused. Over and over he emphasized that the Reds would be a fundamentally sound team. They are anything but. Is it all his fault? No way. The players are making the blunders and management has put some of these bunglars on the roster (does anyone EVER want to see Stanton throw another pitch in a Reds uniform?). But he is currently the captain of a sinking ship and deserves some of the blame. I guess I can accept not switching him midstream, but I'll never be convinced he is the right man for this team (or any MLB team).
June 6, 200719 yr I think you've summed it up fairly well. Starting pitching: 2 solid starters and then "we hope." Bullpen: Please - past their prime and not MLB quality youngsters(yet). Leadoff hitter: None Clutch hitting: None Team speed: None Castoffs and hasbeens: see first part of bullpen post Passion: None - blame both the players and Jerry. Like it or not, its part of his job. Defense: OK - I can actually live with the defense we have which, of course, could be because most other aspects are poor. Fundamentals : all talk - no action (see Jerry) Jerry has his faults. The team is NOT bad because of him. However, I don't see him making them better. Thanks and I said last year and during the off-season, the Reds needed to make some pitching moves, to help the team. For the most part, the gaggle of middle relief pitchers, haven't panned out. Still have the same problems, as previously and looking to improve, with role players, who can't be consistent position players, hasn't, isn't and won't work. I've also stated numerous times, the Reds fans deserve better. At some point, teams start looking at next year but the Reds, have been looking at next year, for some time.....and next year, is the same as previous.

I would add the lack of a decent option at catcher as another pitfall for the Reds. Other than that obviously we agree:thumb:
