I think that Saul could be a pretty good coach. People loved to hate him, but he had heart & he was a leader on the floor.

He WANTED Saul at UK very soon also. He had been planning this for sometime. I don't see their recruiting beefing up anytime soon.

Saul was one of the reasons he started getting heat at UK. I hope it works out better for him as a coach.

Saul would have been grilled as a coach to.. how could he recruit when the players would have been asking why he played at UK?

BUT him and his father are now at a spot where they can do things the way they want. Good luck to them.

Agree completely. The kid had the heart of a lion and always gave everything he had. Pretty decent player too. Got a bad rap from about 18 or so percent of the fans.

Bad Rap?

You stated the problem in your post --"pretty decent player".

Pretty decent players shouldnt be our #1 choice to be the starting point guard. Also , this set recruiting at that position back 3 years because great players dont want to compete against the coaches son.

Looking at Saul's ability , Tubby put himself and his son in a no win situation. IMO

I agree, he was a good player, he just didnt have much around him. He played good defense, was a leader, and made some big shots.

I know of two coaches that I think are still unemployed but have Minnesota ties.

Luther Van Damme

Dobber

I find it odd that Tubby was so loyal to his assistants at UK (David Hobbs, Reggie Hanson, Scott Rigot), that it might have been part of him not having the Kentucky job anymore, but yet none of them are to be on his staff at Minnesota?

He thought enough of them to not fire them at UK, but not enough to take them with him. I know he and David Hobbs go way back, maybe 30 years.

Michigan basketball can't afford to have nepotism rules. If that rumor is true, they lost out on a pretty good coach.

:thumb: :thumb: If that is true (and it may very well be) the you are correct. Their "rule" just cost them one of the best coaches in the country.

:thumb: :thumb: I agree 100%, if the rest of Tubby's players would have had a fraction of the heart, desire and work ethic that Saul had then a couple more NC banners may very weell be flying in Rupp! Saul had to have the thickest skin imaginable from all the verbal abuse that he withstood whle at U.K.. Saul played with all hustle, heart and desire - he played the game "smart" and all along hearing more critisizm in Rupp than he did on the road. Just another example of Tubby and "Tubby's family" bashing by the loud minority of idiots during his time at U.K.! :irked:

Yeah.. I was wondering the same. True loyalty there.

I would be ashamed to make the comment that Saul was good enough to play for UK.

Where's G.G. and Brian during all of this? With all the Smith's working together, they can't be stopped? They may even come out with their own reality tv show, "Tubby knows best." We are The Smiths.

Gigi married a DR. and is living in Hawaii. Brian is playing college basketball. It sounds as if they are doing very well and as you say "They can't be stopped" even if some would love to see them fail.:sssh:

"Pretty decent players" = our longest final 4 drought in school history.

It was just announced today in the Minnesota newspaper that Saul will join his dad as an assistant coach.

It also said that he has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech.

No word on any of the other positions yet.
