Unlevel Playing Field

Featured Replies

You missed the point. They still have a single high school. Most areas (check out NKY and Oldham) feel the need to build new schools and branch out to other areas of the county. It works to Scott County's favor to simply enlarge one school, in athletics of course. BTW, did you guys ever finish that football field?

As far as I know - the football team will still be playing at Rawlings Stadium on Georgetown College's campus - where the Bengals do their spring training... it's a pretty nice place, but it does get sloppy when it is over-used and wet outside.

I think the Oldham Co's and Bullitt Co's are the ones that messed up.
Oldham County and Bullitt County aren't comparable with Scott County. If they went with just one high school for the entire county, each school would house around 3,000 students.

Frankly, that's way too big for my taste. As far as I'm concerned, the advantages such a school would produce for athletics (in terms of wins and losses) are outweighed by the detriments.

Personally, I would like to see high schools limited to 1,500 students.

I think when Dr. Blankenship retires the new superintendent will come in and the first thing he/she'll do is build another high school - and we'll become a divided county with no chance at winning in the 11th
From an educational standpoint, and in terms of giving more kids to participate in extracurricular activities, it could very well be the best move for the county.

Contending for state championships isn't the most important thing ...

It was a pretty cool, bonding, family type celebration at SCHS last night. I don't see many detriments. There are soooooo many extracurricular activities offered at SC that a kid who can't find something to do just isn't looking. I do wish they would build another gym so that there could be an intermural league for those who don't play on the varsity/jv team. There is a city league, which is free, but it would be better if it were run by the school system. However, there is a value to contending for state championships...

The flipside of your point may be where schools with less than 300 or so students should be forced to consolidate with another school. No school should be so small that they cannot offer a student the opportunity to play football or other activity that requires lots of students.

The SC band took up as much room in the stands as most student sections. SC has an awesome music program with several areas to participate in - all because there are enough people to teach/coach them and enough kids to fill them. Is the superintendent of a small school doing the students a dis-service because they don't have the opportunity to perform at places like the Singletary Center - because there aren't enough parents to fill the place up? Would the students be better served by combining resources with another school to create MORE overall opportunities for students?

When you talk about these things maybe it's the opportunity to play varsity basketball that isn't the most important issue. ;)

Scott County's school system is of a size that there is no reason they couldn't divide into two schools and still have the same offerings for their students as the current situation.

County pride... it means something here. I don't know how else to explain it.

It helps when u have a superintendent that loves the sports programs so much.

Why not take a vote at what the students want. I will promise you that what they want is to stay together and have a great school. I am so glad I didnt go to North or South Bell. There are 2 other high schools in the county and it creates rivalries and causes students to really dislike each other. Every year there is talk of the students fighting each other from different schools. It actually happens every other year.

As for winning a state title, I cant imagine anything being better for a school from an extra-curricular stand point.

He loves the "We're all on the same team" thing too.

I think that the multiple schools divides a county. There is something to be said for "county pride". Mason Co. has it, GRC has it, and Scott Co. has it - it makes these places special. Did you see how many GRC fans were at Rupp. SC fans were fewer than normal because we played two morning games on work days, but Saturday there was a lot of SC red in Rupp. Our superintendent believes in the unity of the county - and one high school allows for everyone to be on the same page. I think the Oldham Co's and Bullitt Co's are the ones that messed up.

I think when Dr. Blankenship retires the new superintendent will come in and the first thing he/she'll do is build another high school - and we'll become a divided county with no chance at winning in the 11th - it will be similar to the Jessamine Co. schools. The big game of the year will be against the cross-town rival instead of the finals of the sweet sixteen.

Agree that multiple schools divides a County from an athletic perspective. Happened to Franklin County in 1980. (In 1980 won 11th region in boys and girls basketball, Girls were 2nd in the State, boys made it to the final 8.....football team was 12-1). At that time there was another School in the County....Frankfort High (Their basketball team was top 10 all year in 1980). Three schools in Franklin County really split up the talent, but there have been years since the split that Schools in Franklin County have been competitive in the State.

Disagree that another high school in Scott County leads to no chance to win the 11th. Franklin County did it in 1995 with Roni Robinson and David Evans. Lost to Breckinridge County opening round of the Sweet 16 in a close game..... Breck went on to win State. Another High school in Scott County would probably decrease the chances of legitimately making a run at the 11th region and State every year.

Nothing wrong with a big game during the year being against a cross town rival.

The positives of multiple schools, and I'm sure it has already been mentioned, is that more kids get an opportunity to play real minutes at the varsity level. There is nothing wrong with that either as the most important benefit of athletic competition for kids in high school are the life lessons that they learn, and carry with them the rest of their lives.

The thing that I know for sure is that change is inevitable. It appears that development and growth in Scott County is at a faster rate than most places in KY. The issue of building another High School is something that will probably have to be discussed at some point in the future.

My post is only to point out facts as I know them. With regard to the title of this thread, "Unlevel Playing Field", I have said before the playing field will never be completely level. I think you just have to do the very best you can do with the hand that you are delt.

Scott County has kids with alot of God given talent, but they also do a very good job of developing that talent into extremely competetive teams.

I tell you what split Scott Co. up into two schools and see what happens. I bet you Coach Hicks would have a fit and retire?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Sorry but this is apples and oranges. Basketball teams only require about ten decent players. Football teams require more varied skill sets and body types to field atleast 50 players for a decent 4A team, that is why there are not classes in Basketball.

Sorry Ram but I just got to

I have no doubt that you should know from first hand experience. In fact, I have a copy of the convicting email from about six years ago.;) The interesting fact is that the email shows the school you refer to as the victim and not the perpetrator. You know who is the perpetrator, don't you?

Forgive me Scooterbob for not responding sooner, but life has been busy.

I have no clue what email you are referring to. You never cease to amaze me! Your antics and attacks are shallow. After catching up on all the posts here I have to say thank you for the laughs! After a stressful week i needed it!. And by the way, I have a few emails I printed and saved myself.... :thumb:

And i will ask this of you again nicely, do not ever again attack or insult my family on this site. Your snide remarks do not impress me.

Why do we always talk about Scott Co when talking of large high schools? There are several larger schools in Kentucky.

Its like people are upset because Scott County only has 1 high school. And people complain too much about public schools. I think a lot of programs need to get to work and develop good programs (as good as the program can be) and quit complaining so much.

Wow, 10,000 people moved into Scott County in the past six years and they still have the same lone high school for the entire county.
I was told by an elected official in Scott County that the population has doubled in the last 18 years from just over 20,000 to over 40,000.

I also understand that the plans to bulid the Technical School are moving forward and that this site and school will ultimately be the new high school in Scott County.
