Unlevel Playing Field

Featured Replies

Because I'm only familiar with the practices of some rural privates. For me to get on here and accuse Covington Catholic, DeSales, or Sayre of recruiting would be incorrect since I don't follow these programs like I do others.

Also, it's a little different animal when a metro private school can go after kids in an area with 200,000 people as opposed to going after kids in areas of 20,000 and less. Although both are wrong, It's not as glaring in the metro areas.

It is not about whining or handouts or anything else like that. I think some private schools abuse the fact that they can have students from outside their county or state. That upsets a lot of people. JBS doesn't seem to fit that mold.

Public or private, when you receive transfers regularly, there is scrutiny that comes with it. Witness Scott County's boys programs in previous years with their players from the Corbin and Lexington areas.

Define "abuse". Does that mean the "R" word, or does "abuse" simply mean not imposing limitations on yourself?

I don't get it with the transfers; is it impossible for a kid to transfer to a more successful program because he wants to win, or must he be recruited? Furthermore, Scott County has lost transfers as well, just this year that kid was playing for another school (I forget who, someone will fill this in).

Scott County had two future Mr. Basketballs transfer in as juniors ... that just doesn't sit too kindly with a lot of people. Not to mention that one of them was just a little suspicious.

There was 10,000 people that moved in Scott Co the last six years. Good kids are gonna move in. There are jobs and alot of new schools. Minutes from Lexington and an hour from Cincy and Louisville. Its just a great community to live in. People trust me its the systym and the coaching. Kids who play basketball here take it a little further. They want to get better to get to this point. They go to camps and play on AAU teams to get a shot at this. You have to be apart of this community to understand what it means to this area. Coach Hicks called me last night on the team bus heading back to G-town to let me know that they were thinking about me. I was really close to this program until the last year and moving to Orlando makes it more special to get that call. Its the people that makes it great. All these kids have gone to school here for guite awhile. People are gonna move in. These kids parents have to have jobs. Be it Toyota or one of its suppliers or Gtown college or whomever.

Heres few good questions.Who are the top private schools not in the tournament this year and did they have a leginimate shot at making it and making some noise in the sweet 16. How many played in the regional finals or semis?? What was their margin of defeat in their last game?? Whats this years total of 1 tem compared of each of the last few years??

answer these and we'll see if the playing field is unlevel. I think its just the way things worked out this season.

I have a question, I heard somethign this weekend while downstate sitting around the pool at the hotel, does Scott Co. have open enrollment?

Seems to be an extremely unfair practice if true. So any kid from around the state can enroll as long as they are willing to commute.

Your definition of "open enrollment" is incorrect. Open enrollment is a policy that is for students who live in the county. Scott County does have open enrollment as a district policy. That means that if a parent wants to drive his/her child to a different elementary or middle school (within the district) than the one they are districted to attend - that is ok (as long as the school is not full). There has been some moving of student/athletes between middle schools (Georgetown Middle, Scott Co. Middle, and now Royal Springs) that has made administration consider limiting open enrollment to elementary school only. Since there is only one high school in Scott County - open enrolloment is not an issue. Students from other school districts can not come to Scott County.

Marroncat, i agree with you. There are some that just arent happy and cant help but causing static, when it is usually brought on by their own doings.

i also agree with Nomorenoles, why dont the private schools start their own association then they wouldnt have reason to cry around and bash every other team. And Scooterbob, dont tell me that the school you so much praise on here follows the rules, i know better....From first hand experience.

Actually, one out of 16 (6%) is much more in line than the percentage of private schools in the state than the football finals usually are.

Not that any of it matters to the demagogues on both sides of the issue ...

East Bank, That is a good question. What were each of the 16 region finals teams playing.

Lastly, what was the percentage in The girls state tourney? And in all other sports?

RickyP, someone has told me in the past sometime that a public school has NEVER made it to the state Volleyball finals? could someone confirm this b/c Assumption is a private school true? RickyP is trying to stir with a big stick IMO

Wow, 10,000 people moved into Scott County in the past six years and they still have the same lone high school for the entire county.

I imagine that most everyone so inclined noticed the abundance of publics in the field this year. I believe the telling fact is that I haven't seen, heard, or read where private supporters were whining, crying, and complaining about it. That, of course, is the point that Rickyp is making. But, then, privates don't go around expecting handouts.

No that is definitely not the business of the privates. They dont receive handouts they just.............................

Nope - they built a bigger one. Next is a technology center - still part of the one high school that everyone in the county bands together to cheer for...

You missed the point. They still have a single high school. Most areas (check out NKY and Oldham) feel the need to build new schools and branch out to other areas of the county. It works to Scott County's favor to simply enlarge one school, in athletics of course. BTW, did you guys ever finish that football field?

I have no doubt that you should know from first hand experience. In fact, I have a copy of the convicting email from about six years ago.;) The interesting fact is that the email shows the school you refer to as the victim and not the perpetrator. You know who is the perpetrator, don't you?

I think that the multiple schools divides a county. There is something to be said for "county pride". Mason Co. has it, GRC has it, and Scott Co. has it - it makes these places special. Did you see how many GRC fans were at Rupp. SC fans were fewer than normal because we played two morning games on work days, but Saturday there was a lot of SC red in Rupp. Our superintendent believes in the unity of the county - and one high school allows for everyone to be on the same page. I think the Oldham Co's and Bullitt Co's are the ones that messed up.

I think when Dr. Blankenship retires the new superintendent will come in and the first thing he/she'll do is build another high school - and we'll become a divided county with no chance at winning in the 11th - it will be similar to the Jessamine Co. schools. The big game of the year will be against the cross-town rival instead of the finals of the sweet sixteen.
