Seeding The Sweet 16?

Featured Replies

Is there any logical reason why this is not done? Please try to come up with something better than "It's the way it's always been done." or "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I understand the seeds may be off a spot or two, i.e. Ballard 1 and Scott County 2, but nothing egregious.

Right know we have a blind draw to determine who plays who. Why not seed it?

That's a good question. But how would they seed? Like the NCAA's and go from a computer and SOS?

What would be the source to seed it? A selection committee? Just like the NCAA Selection Committee, their would be cries of "they hate the mountain teams" or "the Louisville teams get a raw deal" ect. ect.

Most importantly, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Duh! :D

You could use all of the above. Have a comittee of ex coaches from around the state, one from each region, or use Atheltic Directors. Have the coach/ad step out of the room when his Region's representative's ranking is discussed or finalized.

I'd be interested in seeing how far off the Cantrall and Lit ratings are right now if the teams were seeded.

#1,#1 Scott County (30-2)

#2,#2 Ballard (32-2)

#3,#3 Warren Central (28-4)

#4,#4 Christian County (28-4)

#5,#8 Holmes (23-9)

#6,#7 Clark County (25-7)

#7,#6 Fairdale (24-7)

#8,#5 South Laurel (28-5)

#9,#10 Elliott County (24-6)

#10,#15 Paducah Tilghman (25-7)

#11,#11 Owensboro (24-8)

#12,#13 Adair County (23-9)

#13,#14 Lincoln County (24-9)

#14,#12 Oldham County (23-6)

#15,#9 Shelby Valley (29-3)

#16,#16 June Buchanan (26-6)

Looks pretty easy to me. The only schools were there is a large disparity are South Laurel, Holmes, Tilghman and Shelby Valley.

That means 25% of the teams could be seeded wrong.

Or 100% "could be seeded wrong" in a blind draw?

What percentage do you think are seeded wrong in the NCAA?

The ranking comparison is not exhaustive, but rather simply illustrative. As mentioned above, there would need to be discussion on all teams, but it appears only four are off.

Seeded matchups under Cantrall ratings:

1) Scott County

16) June Buchanan

8) South Laurel

9) Elliott County

5) Holmes

12) Adair County

4) Christian County

13) Lincoln County

6) Clark County

11) Owensboro

3) Warren Central

14) Oldham County

7) Fairdale

10) Paducah Tilghman

2) Ballard

15) Shelby Valley

I always like the idea of regionalizing the Sweet 16 - Regions 1-4 in a pod (play each other Wednesday afternoon); Regions 5-8 in a pod (play Wednesday night); Regions 9-12 in a pod (play Thursday afternoon); and Regions 13-16 in a pod (the Mountain pod would play Thursday night).

Then go from there. You'd have a representative from each "section" of the state playing in Friday's quarterfinals.

Just a wild thought...

I'm all for seeding. Too many times all the best teams are in the same bracket. I am also for doing away with districts and seeding regions.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you have to beat the best to be the best.

With this way of thinking North Carolina could have played Florida in the opening round of the NCAA.

I'm all for doing away with the district r/up making the region. With nothing but winners at the region, this eliminates the need to seed the region. As far as seeding the state, I'm not so keen on that. At Rupp/Diddle, everyone won something to get there, so I don't feel so bad about the blind draw.

Is there any logical reason why this is not done?

The only logical reason that matters is that there wouldn't be nearly enough support to get it through a vote. Consider the regions that have regularly had lower-rated teams in recent years. Exactly zero schools in those regions would vote for it.

The best teams in the strongest regions would vote yes to seeding, but even the middle- and bottom-of-the-pack schools in those regions would vote no so it wouldn't bite them if they ever snuck into the tourney.

The overwhelming majority of the KHSAA member schools fall into one of these two categories: (1.) They might make the Sweet Sixteen now and then, but they're usually an underdog when they get there, or (2.) they have little or no chance of ever qualifying. There's absolutely no reason for any of those schools to vote for this.

And yeah, if it ain't broke ...

West Virginia does that now and they let the coaches vote on it. Which makes it tuff I guess in a sense for teams that dont get seen a lot but its one of best ideas I can think of, or has a comitee that watches throughout the year and goes out in the the regional torunament and watches.
