2007 Pikeville

My big question is leadership. If we can find the team leadership that IMO we lacked when Mayo and Shurtleff went down last year then the possibilities are endless as to what this team can do. First we gotta get by Holy Cross in the PCB and then the rest of our brutal non disrtict schedule.

To some other points in this thread:

CE: we're returning some VERY talented and VERY hard-working kids in the backfield. Most know of Daniel Harmon (Jr-to-be), Ted Honaker (Sr), and Tim Honaker (Sr), but some others like Chaz Jackson (Sr), Josh Mullins (Jr), and Houston McAnallen (Soph) have had VERY good off-seasons in the weight room and have looked impressive this spring.

NCF: we will host perennial 1A power Louisville Holy Cross on Saturday, Aug. 25 in the PCB. In addition, we'll be challenged with other non-district games against big-school powers Ashland and LexCath along with our traditional area rivals Belfry and Prestonsburg.

iP: as our guys learned the hard way last year, the minute you start thinking about how "easy" your road is, that's exactly when do something stupid that runs yourself right off it! The only "road" we're concerned with is the one that leads to Holy Cross in the FIRST game. After that, we'll think ONLY about Ashland. Etc. Etc. Etc.

ofc: Nice of you to say that, and I appreciate it personally. However, the BEST things going about Pikeville football right now are the players (talent! work-ethic! and CHARACTER!!!) and the INCREDIBLE assistant coaches we've got. If the head coach didn't show up for a week or two, trust me, we'd still be in VERY good shape. Having an administration that really CARES about your success and REALIZES what's necessary to make that happen with football helps a WHOLE lot too.

Is Jon Stratton still the Principal at Pikeville? Hope Chaz has an outstanding year for the Panthers this season.

He is.

Chaz is looking very good in the backfield AND at OLB so far. Getting a lot stronger in the weight room.

Agreed.

Trust me, it's not being left "to chance." We'll be having leadership training with the kids that have proven it means the most to them this off-season.

Still, it's hard to "train" guys to be as good as those two were. They were the epitome of "natural leaders." Leadership was effortless to those guys and never something that was forced.

Pikeville's nondistrict schedule will include Louisville Holy Cross(Pike County Bowl), Ashland, Lexington Catholic, Belfry, and Prestonsburg?? If so thats a pretty tough schedule for the Panthers but will have them ready for the playoffs.

I applaud the non-district schedule...I doubt there is a harder one in the state.:thumb:

For a school our size, maybe....but check out BUTLER in Louisville:

Non-District games:

John Hardin (almost beat St. X)

at Trinity (state champ)

Male (they're MALE!)

at Ballard (one of most athletic teams in state)

at Nelson Co. (former 4A state champ)

Eastern

Holy Cross

That may not look TOO bad to some, but when you factor in their DISTRICT games...

at St. Xavier

Manual

PRP

WOW!

Id say we have the hardest schedule in 1a by far. When you play 5 non-disrtict teams, and the weakest one is P-burg, thats a tough schedule!

That's what I was meaning to say, the hardest 1A schedule in the state.

I'm sure there are some bigger schools that have tougher schedules, like Butler, but I doubt a 1A team could top that.

With our schedule were kindve testing this new 6 class system by ourselves. We play:

5a (Ashland)

4a (Lexcath)

3a (Belfry)

2a (P-Burg)

1a (Louisville Holy Cross). All we needed was a 6a team and we wouldve run the gauntlet. All these schools will be a contender in theyre districts if not the favorite to win them. I give Coach J alot of credit for not ducking anybody, cause if this schedule dont kill us it will make us stronger.

First, Thanks Coach J for your remarks about our program and good luck to your Panthers in 07. Its always great when 2 storied programs from EKY can play each other.

Second, mountianmojo68; As much as I would like to Ashland say is a favorvite in the new 5A District 6 classification there much work to be done. To compete with Bryan Station, Johnson Central, Montgomery County, and Woodford County the young Tomcats will litterally have to reload.

Good luck to both teams in the second week of 07 and I would also like to say it sounds like Pikeville HAS found a keeper.

Anytime you play Ashland, its no small job to come out of Putnam with a win. Ashlands been tough for as long as I can remember so it will not be an easy task for Pikeville.

Good job Coach J, thats what i like about you folks. You take everything on head on leaving no room for doubts about your dedication and talents.

But for now i'm only focused on Week 1 Holy Cross Right Coach ;)

Amen, brother.

Only one small correction: WE are only focused on Week 1 Holy Cross.

Cut out the penalties and mental breakdowns and your boys should go far coach!
