They have one of the best Head Coaches around, for Pikeville I hope that they can keep him there. Cause he will take them to Louisville soon.

Who are they returning in the backfeild? Last year they had 3 or 4 kids maybe even 5 that could all run.

There might not be an easier road in the state than the one they have to travel. Pikeville really benefitted from the six class system. Good for them.

Good luck to the panthers.

Get what you want in this thread straight from the "horse's mouth" (I've been called worse by others, so no big deal).

In the commons area of the high school THIS COMING MONDAY, MARCH 26, at 6:30pm, I will be hosting a "Talking Panther Football" session for anybody in the Pikeville community that wants to know more about what's going on with the team so far this off-season in the weight room, on the field at Spring Practice, and with the program as a whole.

I'll do a brief presentation of the above things then we'll have a question/answer session. Ask away -- why do what we do in the weight room? How does our staff approach game-planning each week? What's our long-term plan for developing the "grass-roots" of the program? And hey, I'll even answer those, "Why the goofy offense last year?" questions! Then, you're invited as our guests to come over to the field to watch the last hour of that night's Spring Practice.

We want this program to be GREAT. To do that, I really believe the whole COMMUNITY (outside of the coaches, the players, and their coaching staff) needs to get involved in it...and not just when we're in the middle of a playoff run. We know Panther fans and former players are PASSIONATE about their team (we see it on boards like this all the time). We want to have the most knowledgable and "involved" fans in the state. We want them in on not just WHAT we do, but WHY we do it. We want them to feel a PART of it.

So, this is just a first step toward our opening up of the program to the community. I, along with some of our hard-working Booster Club members, am working on doing our own version of community-oriented projects that happen in real "football-towns":

1. a "Meet the Panthers" night in late July or early August. Community cookout, players there in their game jerseys, pictures taken with players and their fans/family, etc.

2. And in-season, "Panther Mondays" at a local eatery where I along with another coach or two and a few players get together to watch some highlights and discuss last Friday's game as well as the scouting report for the that week's game.

I'm open to other ideas that will involve the Pikeville community BEYOND our parents, coaches, and players in our program. I've researched it this off-season, and I've found that this kind of thing is happening much better presently at places like Owensboro, at Corbin, at Ashland, at Highlands, and yes, it happens BIG-TIME down the road at Belfry! We think football should be as big to the community, fans, and former players at PIKEVILLE as it is in those other tradition-rich places.

Hope to see you this coming Monday, March 26!

To some other points in this thread:

CE: we're returning some VERY talented and VERY hard-working kids in the backfield. Most know of Daniel Harmon (Jr-to-be), Ted Honaker (Sr), and Tim Honaker (Sr), but some others like Chaz Jackson (Sr), Josh Mullins (Jr), and Houston McAnallen (Soph) have had VERY good off-seasons in the weight room and have looked impressive this spring.

NCF: we will host perennial 1A power Louisville Holy Cross on Saturday, Aug. 25 in the PCB. In addition, we'll be challenged with other non-district games against big-school powers Ashland and LexCath along with our traditional area rivals Belfry and Prestonsburg.

iP: as our guys learned the hard way last year, the minute you start thinking about how "easy" your road is, that's exactly when do something stupid that runs yourself right off it! The only "road" we're concerned with is the one that leads to Holy Cross in the FIRST game. After that, we'll think ONLY about Ashland. Etc. Etc. Etc.

ofc: Nice of you to say that, and I appreciate it personally. However, the BEST things going about Pikeville football right now are the players (talent! work-ethic! and CHARACTER!!!) and the INCREDIBLE assistant coaches we've got. If the head coach didn't show up for a week or two, trust me, we'd still be in VERY good shape. Having an administration that really CARES about your success and REALIZES what's necessary to make that happen with football helps a WHOLE lot too.

Coach,

Thanks for the info. I will be making the five plus hour drive down to catch all four games. Good luck this season.

Pikeville's nondistrict schedule will include Louisville Holy Cross(Pike County Bowl), Ashland, Lexington Catholic, Belfry, and Prestonsburg?? If so thats a pretty tough schedule for the Panthers but will have them ready for the playoffs.

Good luck to my old rival.

Coach J,

I applaude your candor and willingness to be so open with the members here and within your community. I think a lot of HS coaches could learn some valuable things from that.

Sounds like some great things are going on in your program. Best of luck and keep it up! :thumb:

Thanks, Charlie. Really just stealing ideas from other guys I admire. I heard of some things they do to get their communities more involved with their programs, decided to stop complaining that it doesn't happen, and start doing something to MAKE it happen (guys like Leon Hart at Ashland, Joe Prince at Owensboro, Jim McKee at Scott Co., Phillip Haywood at Belfry, Steve Jewell at Corbin, and a few others are doing this stuff much better than I).

Sounds like you are doing some goodwill work there Coach J. And following those examples, you couldn't go wrong, that's for sure.

I'm looking forward to the film sessions. :D :thumb:
