South Park. How can they?

On the "kids are not going to emulate what they see on television, hear in their music or watch at movies" argument....

Explain the huge increase in sales of fighter jackets and sunglasses after Top Gun came out.

Explain the boys wearing the pants below the crack of their butt like the rappers do.

Explain the grunge look in the early 90's after Nirvana and such bands became popular.

Explain the STAR TREK CONVENTIONS.:D

Explain the mullet after the rock bands of the 80's. In fact, explain the whole fashion sense of the 80's after the rock band.

Explain my usage of the word, "Word" after the song "Word Up" came out.

Explain the trendy lingo after television shows make something popular (Fonzie and hey, Sweathogs and the up your nose with a rubber hose, Mork's stuff, etc, etc)

etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc.,

Those influences go BOTH ways. There are positive influences (STAR TREK:D :D ) and there are negatives (mullet:D :D ).

If you believe that kids ARE NOT influence by what they see and hear, then I don't know what to tell you but that flatout you are wrong.

You are comparing fashion with the decline of society? Wow. I did not realize they were the same thing. For another thing. Are you sure the mullet wasn't around before they seen it on tv. Are people imitating tv or is tv imitating people. In other words does art imitate life or does life imitate art. I don't know what the world would do without you. They have argued this question for life times but with you we have figured it out. They are just flatout wrong. I'm glad you cleared that up. Now we are talking about south park in paticular. I think the main arguement is who is the audience and is the message inappropriate. The audience is 20somthings and yes its a good message and a good means of delivery for this age group.

Thanks for the last part of the post where you contributed to the discussion instead of turning the whole post into a immature rant directed at me.

My point is that kids ARE INFLUENCED by what they see. Many on here have said that South Park does NOT INFLUENCE kids. That media and the like DOES NOT INFLUENCE kids. I responded with a litany of things showing that media does influence all aspects. And I did not just compare fashion. I compared speech and actions.

A cartoon may on the surface be said to aim at 20 somethings but they ARE NOT the driving force on spending in buying the t-shirts and other such merchandise. Teens are the target. It is a cartoon that Comedy Central puts on at 9:00 PM.

Before you take it to the route about a parental rant, let me point out that I AGREE THAT THE PARENTS ARE THE MAIN BLAME. But I do think that people who negatively contribute to problems in this society hold blame too. I don't think they should get free clearance.

Similar to what the legal system has done with bars. If a person goes to a bar and gets drunk, REALLY falling down drunk, and wrecks killing someone, the bar can be held liable for serving him EVEN THOUGH we are talking about an adult who has chosen his own actions. The bar doesn't get a free pass on this. THe court system has held that they hold some liability.

I don't see this as much difference. I AM NOT SAYING THAT WE SHOULD ALL SUE SOUTH PARK FOR THE PROBLEMS OF OUR CHILDREN. Using the analogy to make a point.

You couldn't help yourself. You had to throw in an insult at the beginning. That was not a rant. How ever you did not even address the question of who is imitating who. Is television imitating us or are we imitating television.

I thought I did. I used the word "word" from Word UP after it came out in the song.

Boys are wearing their pants below the crack of their butt after they see it happening by rappers.

I am pretty positive no one was saying Up your nose with a rubber hose on a consistent basis until the Sweathogs started with it.

Music and television and movies has always been a leader in the culture and directing where society is heading trend wise.

Here is the way I see it, for what my opinion is worth. I feel like all parts of life direct influece and leadership on us as an indidvidual, of which is both positive and negative. We are influenced by what we see, what we hear, what we are taught, so on and so on. 95% of the people in the world are conformist. That is the reason that groups like the Nazi party were able to get the bulk of a population to accept Fascism. The key is that we don't allow the negative influences in life to outweigh the positive influences. It goes back to the fact that the mentors in a childs life must take active interest in what can influence a child. If the child spends more time watching Southpark than he or she spends in a posive influential envireonment, Southpark will have an effect on the child. On the other hand, if a child watches Southpark, emulates the actions seen, and is severely punished by caring parents, I don't think it will have near the effect. You are what you eat. I am a competent adult. Through my lifetime, I have been desensitzed to witnessing violence due to the fact that almost everything that I have watched on tv involves violence. This doesn't mean that I committ violent acts, but it does mean that I am not suprised to see or hear about violent acts. Point being, I will never blame the tv program or video game. I will blame the parents that allow the video game to be played or purchased or the tv program to be watched. I have the availability to try and reverse negative influences within the classroom. However, it is tough to turn around poor parenting in a short amount of time. I suppose our sucesses are what continues to drive us to be teachers.

Great posts and great points.

Throughout this thread and probably unsuccessful, I have tried to say that my point with South Park and such things is that they are creating problems that our society will have to face in the future.

As I read your post and especially the bolded and add to my view that we need to be a preventive society, we need more of the positive adults in our society to be involved in mentoring programs, scout programs, church programs, etc, etc.

There IS A HUGE PROBLEM in our society in parents not being responsible. The rest of us need to be a more positive influence through such programs to try and offset the lack of parent invovlement in some kids' lives. It is VITAL that those of you that could be positive influences in the lives of kids, do it.

If you leave it ONLY for the teachers to overcome, I fear that we will not be able to overcome it alone. Especially as here in KY, the requirements of the politicians gives us LESS time to mentor kids and get to know them.

Great point 94.

Ironic that we both agreed with him and it was seeming that we were on opposite sides.

I think that the parents who let their children watch South Park and Adult Swim are a bigger threat to society than the shows are.

This may be off subject, but I want to ask your opinion. How many children have you seen that seem to feel that they should have no accountability for their words or action? It is so obvious when you first see these action in the classroom. If a child tells a teacher to f off in a classroom, it is obvious that the child has never been in an environment that maintains accountability for his or her actions. We try to level accountability within school through suspention, Isap, or alternative school. These are all jokes. They love to get out of the work environment of their original classrooms. If they didn't, they wouldn't act out in the first place. I feel sorry for these children. They think they are big sharks in a small pond when they are in high school, but they don't realize in a couple of short years they are going to be guppies in the ocean of life. They are not prepared with the social skills to be sucessful in life. Accountability is very harsh if your first contact with it winds up being in front of a judge, the backside of an od, or on the wrong end of a gun. As a teacher, a mentor, and a coach, I feel it is just as important for me to introduce proper leadership, influences, and accoutability upon my kids as it is for me to introduce content. Like I said before, there is no greater feeling than making a difference in a child's life.

You have done a much better job in summing up the essence of my posts. The bolded I agree with 100% and what is behind my posts on shows like South Park, music like rap that calls girls ho's and going to slap them down and movies that send the wrong message.

And the reason behind me saying the problem is growing and something OUR society WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH in the future.

As I said at the beginning, one of my students was using the F word liberally and felt it was okay, in HIS words, "I see all the time on the television. So what's wrong with it."

Had a conversation with a student TODAY in which they were running their mouth to another student. I told him one day he would run his mouth to the wrong person in the wrong environment and he would get the crap beat out of him or killed. He said, no body is going to beat me down and I can say whatever I want. He is a middle schooler. This is common.

When do we start holding kids accountable for their own actions, LBBC? When do we stop blaming TV, movies, music for the way kids act, and start holding them accountable unto themselves?

Hey I AM ALL FOR THAT, too.

But our society has made that clear that a 14, 15 or 16 year old is not accountable for their actions unless a life is taken or after their 100th charge.:irked:

A kid fights in the hallways at school, I am all for assault charges and a disturbance of the educational charge.

There is an abuse of a teacher law. I have chosen to pursue such charges when a student begins to cuss me out and treat me with disrespect. When the parent is not teaching them respect, I feel I have to go all out to teach the lesson, they are not getting.

When do we start holding kids accountable for their own actions, LBBC? When do we stop blaming TV, movies, music for the way kids act, and start holding them accountable unto themselves?
I think that's what a lot of us have been trying to get across. It's about parental (and child) responsibility.

The fact that there are kids in the world that don't have the best of home life, isn't the fault of a TV show. And kids aren't going to be able to make good choices if the parents never give them the opportunity to make one.

Is it the fault of the bar that serves the patron even after they are drunk and that drunk leaves and kills someone in an accident? In our society that business has SOME responsibility. Not FULL, but SOME.

That is all I am saying. Those shows, music, movies have SOME. Not FULL, not MOST, but some.
