I'd give Pietrowski the edge. I'd go with Dinky Phipps (lost four starters) or Kevin Spurlock (late-season slump hurts his case a little) second. Wright and Whitaker always to a good job, but I usually look for somebody that has overachieved.

 

I've been impressed by Conway, and he's done a good job with all the adversity, but in my mind you almost have to break .500 to be in the running.

North started out the season with one player with any significant varsity time. After three weeks, that team of inexperienced youngsters nearly dealt upsets to a pair of top-20 teams. Then, just as NL was playing their best ball, four players were suspended from the team. Two of them were starters — the team's only seniors — and they were kicked off the team permanently by the school board. Sent in a tailspin, the Jags recovered to win three of the last four games. Then, in the district, they turned the tables on a team that beat them earlier in the season when they had a full complement of players.

 

For North to have won five games this years is probably miraculous given all the adversity, let alone 11 and be on the cusp of possibly winning their district. Conway gets my vote.

You know HDE, I forgot about Dinky. He's done a great job this season ... he's right up there, too.

When is Eddie Whitaker ever going to get his due?? He has done a good job for several years and has arguably the best team in the 13th Region this year. Tony P has done a great job at corbin also getting Corbin's young players to play at such a high level already. Steve Wright is an excellent coach, but with 3 key players from a State Championship team still playing he has not done a bad job, but I dont think should be considered for coach of the year.

I am assuming you, just like your pal Les are from the London/Corbin area. I also stand by my statement. They were actually headed nowhere with the team they had in place before THE INCIDENT, then afterwards Shannon and Seidel took over the team and they are probably better without the bunch they lost mainly due to the play of these 2 guys.

 

Most everybody poo-poohed their chances to do anything before the season, given all the losses to graduation. A month into the season they were taking top-20 teams down to the wire. To say they were headed nowhere before the incident is just plain silly, and unobservant at the highest level. If Asher and Trabish are still on this team they win the district easy and are in the mix of contenders to knock SL off the perch, given their continuous improvement.

 

And I am not from the London/Corbin area.

I like where old school notd they were headed nowhere ... hahahaha .... and North Laurel still managed to beat Cumberland ...

Whitaker is deserving but I think Tony Pietrowski has done an exceptional job this year. This is far and away his best job. His team has made strides all year. This is a better job than his regional champs a couple of years ago. I believe he is growing into a very good coach.

I dont see anyone agreeing with you on that one Jim. I saw North play Cordia with everbody and they looked very average to me, I guess that might be why they were under .500 with all their players. The Incident happened on Conway's watch, and I dont know how you could try to make a case for him as coach of the year with something like that happening on his watch. There is more to being a good coach than just getting your team to play well. I am not saying that it was his fault, but I just dont think that you can legitimately make a case for someone to be coach of the year with all that has happened there this year. Bottom line, he has done a pretty good job with all that has happened, but he should not be in the mix for coach of the year honors.

My picks are:

 

1. Wright. Not for the job he has done this year but the basketball program he has built over the long haul.

2. Whitaker. To lose a key player at Christmas and still contend for a regional championship says something. Many of the Bell Co faithful don't know what they have in Whitaker.

3. Pietrowski- I vote him third just for having to learn to spell that last name as a first grader. All kidding aside, his team has come along nicely.

4. Spurlock- Exceeded everyone's expectations this year.

Yours is a very (Corbin biased) opinion IMO and that sometimes is annoying.

I don't care if it is annoying or not .... like I said .... get over it .... if North is so mediocre, then what does that make the teams they have beaten? Didn't the Jaguars beat Cumberland? I thought so.

Let's keep the discussion on 13th Coach of the Year and not each other....:thumb:
