Chris O'Hearn at Mason County gets my vote. I've been around some of the best football, basketball, and baseball coaches over the past 40 years, growing up with a coach as a dad, etc. He ranks with the best. Chris knows his basketball, does a great job with teaching the game and organization, and has the people skills it takes to keep it all together.

 

He's also great to work with on the kids playing more than one sport. As the football coach, I especially appreciate that about him.

How about Brad Carr from Scott? Returns two starters and one bench player with any significant varsity experience, to lead them to 19 wins on the year. Their schedule has been difficult as well.

 

Mike Code is a phenominal coach, as well as each coach listed on this poll. GRC's coach is pretty darn good too. Some great coaches in the 10th. Mike Reitz from CCHS is also proven.

If this thread proves nothing else, it shows just how many fine coaches that we have in the 10th Region. We are very fortunate!

 

The Coaches of the Year in the 10th Region are pre-determined.

 

The winner of the 10th Region All "A" Tournament is the Class "A" Coach of the Year. That position is already filled - Coach Mike Code and the Mustangs won the 10th "A" tournament.

 

The overall Coach of the Year will go to the coach whose team cuts down the nets in the Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon, March 11th.

Mustang I could be wrong but I think most are thinking of the KABC coach of the year voted on by the coaches of the schools in 10th. You are correct in saying the coach of the year is predetermined at the 10th region banquet but could be a different person walking out onThursday or Friday when they bring out players and coaches of the year from each region.

 

I have to agree with you on the coaches in the 10th , very deep as is the tradition!

To me this argument is like determining the MVP of a tourney/ region or season?? Is the best coach, the one who's:

 

1. The coach who's team achieved the most?

2. The coach who's won more with less?

3. The coach who's team overachieved the most?

4. The coach who's team overcome the most adversity and still succeeded?

etc.

Hard to argue with either IMO, although BC's Fite has done a remarkable job this year as well. Carr and his assistants (I'm partial to Coach Gray) have done an incredible job retooling the Eagles this year. I for one, didn't think they would be as bad as many predicted, especially with Sharp, Quigley, Miller & Smith back. I thought they were #4-6 range preseason in the 10th, along with Montgomery and Campbell, who've been disappointments by comparison. I didn't however think they would win 20 games against a decent schedule, and they have certainly overachieved; and enter the districts/regionals as a legit threat!!

 

Code certainly had more to work with going in, but really only had four players with any kind of varsity experience, albiet as starters and key contributors!! He was required to do a lot of retooling after losing his point guard, 3rd guard who played considerable minutes and a big man who became a "co-starter" by the end of last year. The next four guys had very few varsity minutes and were essentially JV players. The coaching staff has done a great job IMO retooling these guys into key contributors, especially molding Kyle Kramer into a solid ball handling guard from strictly a defensive specialist, and Bryan Niemeyer into an inside/outside scoring threat as a big man, after a lifetime of being a guard/wing player!! They had to rework things on the fly as they've lost the services of leading rebounder and 2nd leading scorer Nathan Mutsch for most of the year due to a variety of injuries; and have accomplished more with the All "A" regional and state wins, along with good showings in the MCIT and 5/3rd to date!!

Smith has been a surprise to everyone including Scott folk, he got virtually no varsity minutes,everyone knew he could shoot, but he has stepped up on the defensive end and as a team leader. Quigley has been a non factor for a month and a half. I agree though with everyting you have said about Brossart, I wouldn t mind seeing co-coaches of the year.

If Code's not the best, then how does he do it with a team that NEVER has a player mentioned in the top players in the region. Coop gets an occasional nod due to his point production, but I consistantly see all these other players being the top this & that in the 10th, and none are from BB. The pre-season All "A" ratings had NO BB players even mentioned, but he somehow won the state with a ex-JV player with little Varsity experience leading the way?????????

 

Troy Cooper was ranked 5th in Cats Pause for pre-season. But more then likely his stock has fallen since 2 not so hot performences at Mason County.
