Who in NKY/Cincinnati wants to hear about Gallatin County and Shelby? How many people? 4? The 8th gets no coverage because there is no audience in Greater Cincinnati for it. How many people in Cincy can tell you within 40 miles where Gallatin or Shelby is?

 

Owen County? I'm an advertiser and you are trying to tell me to spend money on a Cincinnati/NKY radio station and you're going to talk about Owen County?

 

IMO there is no market for high school sportstalk. BGP and Yappi already have that covered.

I'd say there is for football but no chance in basketball. I don't think there are enough people that care about Elder/LaSalle last night much less the 8th Region...

I've been pleased with the Enquirer's coverage, seems like they have an article about SK every other week but I usually enjoy Friday Night Flights on KYT even though it's mainly only central and eastern KY, still better than seeing Wilminton/Little Miami highlights.

I appreciate everyone's opinion. You are entitled to it. As I said before, it's not just about those teams but that I want to include those teams. It's Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Not just Northern KY. We'll see what kind of response I get with this. If it doesn't work, so be it.

 

There are enough people who post on here that I think would listen. There will be something in it for everyone. Not just a scoreboard, but other things as well.

One big tip. If you plan to do this you better do it with a built in title sponsor. Air time is not cheap, and selling ads for a new independent venture can be near impossible...

Folks, that's a large metro area that rivals the Lexington area in terms of population. Yet it's one of the most grossly overlooked and underserved areas in the country as far as the media goes.

 

Why is there not a regional daily newspaper (with a strong Web presence as well) covering this area? And no, the Enquirer and Post do not cover this area. Heck, it wasn't until just a few months ago that the Enquirer started sending its Kentucky edition to Gallatin Co., and probably most of the other ring counties surrounding Boone/Kenton/Campbell. Before, those areas only got the Cincinnati Metro edition, as though folks in Warsaw and Carrollton care about what goes on in Avondale.

 

Surely there are some wealthy folks in that area who also wonder this same thing. I have access to the people who could make such a venture happen, from a practical standpoint. All we would need is the financial backing.

Channel 9 seems to do the best job of covering NKY teams IMO. Radio, other than individual school's internet radio broadcasts, are pretty non-existant. The Post and Enquirer (better known as the Covington Catholic Chronicle ) do a decent job on the bigger games!! I thought the Enquirer in particular did a good job of covering the All "A" Classic, with two NKY teams in the finals; and I know Ryan Ernst was at EKU well after the Boy's final was over!!

Those are likely updated estimates, so I'm even underselling the population numbers. For the purpose of that 115K number, I also included counties where the county seat is apx. 45 minutes from Cincy: Carroll - 10K, Harrison - 18K, Mason - 17K, Owen - 11K, and Robertson - 2K. I pulled those numbers from my road atlas, so they are probably low in comparison to the current census estimates.

 

Regardless, the area is criminally underserved.

If air time is expensive and you have to sell ads, you're in trouble IMO. True high school sports fans like you and I use this to get our fix. Sportstalk today in general is not very good. I think most people that call in aren't very smart when it comes to the topic they're talking about and it gets quite repetitive. Because of that, people like me who love high school sports quit listening. Instead, I use BGP because a)I can "listen" when I want and b)I don't have to wade through crap because I can pick and choose what I want to debate/read. I can't do that with radio. You start talking about Owen County or Finneytown and I'm out just like the 2 people in Finneytown that might listen will tune out when you start talking about Newport or Conner or.......

Channel 9 was at the Silver Grove-Ludlow game. They had all 3 of Pelle's dunks on the highlight reel. NKU coaches in attendance once again.

I have worked in radio for 7+ years and broadcasting 2 years. I think that given the opportunity to have coaches on, plus guests dealing with high school sports, (ie: Sports Medicine, Sports Camps, etc.) I think that it could be done well. Not that it would be a year round deal. Looking at Mid August to May. I realize that I will be doing all of the work. Prep, selling it, formatting, booking guests, etc. Not a problem. Done all of that.

 

It MAY NOT work. But a 2 hour show once a week is more coverage than none at all. If it doesn't work, I can say I tried.
