Really too much to ask for Scott Co to beat them twice. But give credit to HHS for coming out and getting the win. As it's been posted here, schedule doesn't get any easier with Catholic and Madison Central on the schedule before districts.

There was some satisfaction in knowing that SC had gained some respect. I didn't see Scooterbob out there - at least not from what I picture him looking like from his Avatar...

 

I don't think there is any reason for this game to happen again next year. HHS loses all the "attractions" so the $$$ would not be the same. SC just loses Walls, Jimmy Warren, Chris James and Mason Karrick... I think it would be advantage Scott Co.

 

By the way - Marcus Birchfield had 30 in the JV game (which Scott Co. won).

Sorry I didn't see you there, Hoops Yoda. You are correct that there is no reason for these two teams to play in the next few years because HHS loses most all of its talent.

 

As for the "storming" of the floor, I think it was motivated more by the revenge factor than by the respect factor. Scott County knocked HHS out of any chance of finishing #1 in the nation and that opportunity won't resurface for a long time- if ever- at HHS. That's not to say that HHS didn't respect Scott County but I don't think there is much chance that very many HHS people felt that SC was on their "level" as a team. HHS waltzed into Lexington expecting a decent game but, still, a win not too much unlike their win over LexCath. They left with their championship bubble permanently burst. Normally, such a shock makes most look for revenge which they got- even without their real primetimer. Neverless, the bubble is gone.

 

The improved play of Patterson (which has been mentioned) and Taylor (which has been overlooked) made up for the absence of Mayo.

 

Scott County is a fine team. However, HHS is better and I believe that, on a truly neutral floor and with Mayo, HHS, when they come out to play and not to just go through the motions, wins the large majority of the time.

It is still a special place and is almost sacred to true UK fans. Rupp Arena, even with its special name, can't remotely touch the "House that Rupp built" or its predecessor, Alumni Gym, which is across the Avenue of Champions and down the street toward Limestone.

 

However, no one should overlook the historical prominence of Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse, home for many years of the Marshall Thundering Herd. Legendary coach Cam Henderson "held court" there. Henderson was a true visionary and is credited with "inventing" the fast break.

 

I am often accused of living in the past and it is a charge that I readily accept as true. The significance of these two historic venues should be realized by all basketball fans. I hope someone took time to tell all the kids who represented these two outstanding high schools of that history. There are few, if any, more significant facilities in college basketball.

You're right - it was two great venues for the games.

 

Dr. Blankenship - the superintendent of Scott Co. Schools played at Marshall when they played in Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse. His wife came into the arena telling everyone about the first time she saw Dr. B play on that floor. Her mother still lives in Huntington - and came with them to the game.

How about Scott Co.trying to play one of the big Indy teams next year?

 

Rumor has it that Scott Co. is traveling to three major tournaments next year:

1. The Beach Ball Classic - Myrtle Beach, SC

2. The Hall of Fame Classic - Springfield, Mass.

3. The City of Palms Tournament - Fort Myers, FL

there should be some good competition at these.

 

I don't know if there will ever be another traveling circus like we had with HHS this year. The following of their high profile players combined with the following SC fans have for the team made for two tremendous atmospheres, HUGE publicity, televised games, etc. It was extra special because OJ had the ties to Kentucky. Plus the games themselves were good - 4 points both times.

 

If there is a way to have another game where Scott Co. can make that much money again - I'm sure the AD will put it together.

A few things:

 

When SC drove, Patterson swatted.

 

HHS held a lead late and was fouled...accounted for 8 to 10 of the foul shot differential.

 

SC got their money's worth when they fouled.

 

Don't think one can blame the refs.

One thing everyone ought to realize is that 2 of Scott Counties fouls should have been intentional, which the Ref let go also. 2 times late in the game it was a obvious pulling of the shirt, which in WV they call that Intentional.

 

Scott County played tough and had their chance, but I honestly feel like Hicks made no adjustment late in the game and that cost them.

That still leaves 13-15 difference in foul shots excluding the down the stretch fouls. Also some very questionable calls late (the HHS player stepping out of bounds as well as others)...How about the no call when the HHS player went nose to nose with the official, that should have been a technical easy. The game at Memorial was a better officiated game.

 

The game at "Memorial" Coliseum was better officiated for a KY fan, and the one at "Memorial" Fieldhouse was better for a WV fan.

 

2 different styles of Officiating.

 

I personally dont think either one was officiated very good.

Honestly their student section at HHS storms the floor after every game they can, they are just a crazy bunch of kids.

Your right, Scott did not go to the basket enough to get any fouls called. They were really scared to go in on Patterson. However refs never call an intentional foul at the end of a game weather it be pro, college, or high school, and I dont think they should. Let the players decide who wins the ballgame. Scott took some bad shots in the end I dont think Hicks had anything to do with it. I think the game was more important to Huntington than to Scott County, and it showed in the way the played defense on Mackey and Walls.
