Bengals Franchise Smith

I know I read on another thread you explaining why the Bengals can't cut either of them.....

If they are going to hit the open market it will be because they are cut. Get them back on the field, move them down the depth chart because of "performance" and cover all of your bases. I don't see any other team trading anything for either...

Wildcat, are you related to Ken Rosenthal? ;):p

JUST KIDDING...don't answer that. I don't want to know.

See National League Preview Thread....Not asking about his relatives.

I'm wrong; I missed one word; sorry!

I'm sorry to point out the obvious, but one was claiming what I said was something the readers of BGP didn't know to be true??????

:p

But in reality, the Bengals can't cut them...unless they wait until Odell comes back and they claim he is not the same player after a year's hiatus, after they evaluate him for a week or two.

I don't see how they could cut Henry, per the CBA.

And that's what I was saying in regards to Odell. I agree Henry would be a much tougher task. And with Chris I could see a very slim chance that someone would trade for him. BUT if they did it would be nothing close to his value and likely be a late 2nd day pick. I could see Tab and Brazelle "passing" him on the depth chart before I see him traded...

Baseball-different animal-no salary cap

Patriots & Colts were letting players go on a squad (Patriots' defense/ Colts' offense)that was already very good-very, very different than the Bengals' defense.

One player never makes a defense; I am not a huge Smith fan; it just makes sense; if you let him go, now the Bengals have to address his position along with ALL OF THE OTHER weak spots on defense; he is a solid player and it is ludicrous to blame the defense's woes on one player. The Bengals were a top 10 defense when he was a rookie; is that all to his credit???

Claiming another player will not play as well as Smith, but the Bengals will be better overall if they sign ONE MORE free agent, come on??????

Let's face it; the Bengals need a lot of help or improvements on defense that ONE free agent is not going to solve; plus a free agent has to learn the system.

Yes very possible! Lets see if Smith is gone then most likely we will have one of those young guys we drafted get a chance. We already have Geathers, then we have guys who probably could be good in Frostee, and wow I cant think of his name but he came from Utah I believe. Then there was always a good chance we could have gotten one of the better D-ends in the draft at our spot. So if we go and sign say a Samuel, or Clemente we have a proven shut down corner on one side with JJ on the other who is on his way. Or get a guy like Thomas at linebacker and we have a guy who is good at rushing the QB which then would also help our corners. So yeah good possibility it could have happened, and I am sure you no that so come on?...

Fanene is the kid from Utah, and I like him too; he just hasn't been healthy and neither has Rucker, but I think he can be a player too. I would rather see them cut a Thornton, Robinson, or Adams than just releasing Smith to free agency. Again he is not great, but he is the best the Bengals have.

Thomas wouldn't be rushing the passer nearly as much in the Bengals' 4-3 scheme as the Ravens 3-4 scheme.

Samuel or Clements would be great I agree.

The Bengals can take the frachise tag off of Smith at any time, so if they got a chance to sign one of the free agents they could to create cap space.

FYI-Curnutte said in today's Enquirer that it looks like the Bengals won't have enough room to go after any major free agents ( a week or so ago, he said they could sign Smith and a big time free agent). I wish he would make up his mind.

:thumb: Well first of all thanks for telling me his name, for the life of me I couldn't remember Fanene's name at that time....And well that was pretty much what everyone knew ahead of time is if we sign Smith back it kills us getting any major free agents...

Still would be surprised if Smith is on the team opening day. This just allows us to dictate where he goes.

Who's going to sign Smith to a tender of 8.5 mil??? It ain't gonna happen, Asante has been tagged so he's out of the equation. Best case scenario, Smith signs long term and we have a solid DE that brings it every down. I agree with Wildcat, how would this team be better without Smith with all the other holes on defense? I for one am glad he'll be back, I'm not happy if it straps the stripes too much.

Players like stability, and he can get more money up front with a long term deal.

8.6 in a year is pretty stable. Plus he'd be able to sign another contract with a signing bonus next year.

I mean stability as far as not having to worry about contract negotiations or where he is going to play and live in the future.

Sure, he can sign a long term next season, but I would guess he would rather do it this season and not have to worry about all that in the future again.

They do have until July 15th to sign a long term deal to get it on this season's cap. If they sign after that, it will go on next year's salary.

Marvin Lewis said last night in an interview with Brad Johannsen of Channel 12 that they will look to add 1 or 2 free agents; he said to Geoff Hobson of bengals.com that they will look to add a free agent where they lose people to free agency.

Those two comments give me the feeling they may go after Clements of Buffalo, which would be great (after losing Tory James).

Daniel Grahm TE of NE is an unrestricted FA; he is someone that would fit perfectly because he is an excellent blocker as well as being an upgrade in Bengals' receiving game.

Weren't we arguing a week or so ago about whether or not the Bengals had the room to sign Smith and a big name free agent??????
