I don't really need anyone to explain the scientific formula but I was wondering how it was monitored/enforced? Where is the official daily WBGT information posted for a given region/area? Or is it all up to the individual school to track it and follow the guidelines? I thought about posting this in the weather sections but thought it might generate a better response here, since I am sure every football program around the state will be watching the WBGT this week. If I am totally off base, please correct me but my understanding WBGT is used to determine if KHSAA events (practices/games) need to be reduced or even cancelled.

As I understand it, it has to be taken ON the field, before the game. There is no regional measurement.

And from what I gather it's on the "honor' system. Except at schools perhaps where an athletic trainer is used.

I don't think it will be an issue for the 7pm games Friday night it's supposed to be in mid 80s I think by then I don't think it would test high enough to be a problem usually the bowl games early in the season that start at 4 or 5 pm is when this is a problem.

I thought it might come into play for those teams that practice this week during that 3p-6p window.

At St. X, the athletic trainers have the WBGT meter set up on the field on a tripod. They also send notifications to coaches if in the KHSAA heat requirement zones.

Are you sure, lol:

Tw = T × arctan[0.151977 × (RH% + 8.313659)^(1/2)] + arctan(T + RH%) - arctan(RH% - 1.676331) + 0.00391838 ×(RH%)^(3/2) × arctan(0.023101 × RH%) - 4.686035

As soon as I saw your thread I knew I needed to dig the old thread up. In short, the heat index "doesn't exist" anymore since making change.

True they won't be able to practice right after school unless they do it indoors.

As mentioned above, typically the trainers at each school are to monitor for their school and chart the readings throughout the practices. The WBGT is to be setup for about 20 minutes before getting your first reading. They can alert the trainer as soon as they reach a certain threshold. They can also alert anyone around with an audible alarm. Those with grass practice fields will have a better chance of holding practice after school this week compared to a school practicing on turf.

Glasgow seems to be about the only school left with a grass field haha. I know there's more but they are dwindling each small budget schools like Edmonson Co and Metcalfe Co have turf fields.

Those of you with turf fields... are you able to practice more often using the wet bulb readings as compared to the old days when it went by heat index?
